About The Position

The Wisconsin Humane Society (WHS) is hiring a seasonal Summer Camp Counselor to engage young people who have completed grades 1-9 in our fun-filled camp programs. The Summer Camp Counselor reports to the Director of Youth Programs and is based at the Milwaukee and Ozaukee campuses. This is a 40 hour per week role that runs from June 15 – August 21 with training taking place the week of June 15. Requirements

  • At least 18 years old
  • Ability to travel to the Milwaukee and Ozaukee campuses
  • Available for a minimum of eight of the weeks of camp and training listed above
  • Comfortable presenting to diverse groups of young people and communicating to a wide variety of audiences
  • Dedicated to providing strong customer service
  • Experience and ability to effectively work with young people who have completed grades 1-9 and meet them where they are
  • Works well with a team and can lead outlined activities with minimal supervision
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and demonstrate flexibility while juggling multiple responsibilities
  • Comfortable handling dogs, cats, and small animals like rabbits and guinea pigs
  • Demonstrated alignment with our mission, people-centered philosophy, and organizational values of compassion, respect, and kindness; innovation; professionalism; equity; and positive approach
  • Ability to navigate emotional aspects of animal welfare work

Responsibilities

  • Lead campers through games, hands-on activities, presentations, and interactions with animals
  • Facilitate high-impact camp programs in alignment with organizational resources and priorities
  • Support youth program volunteers who assist with camp activities
  • Provide a safe, interactive learning environment for campers and animals in a fast-paced environment
  • Follow all camp and youth programs protocols
  • Monitor effectiveness of camp activities and programs and work with youth programs staff on any adjustments needed
  • Set up and clean up camp space and classrooms
  • Use organizationally aligned positive behavior strategies to support youth
