About The Position

The Summer Athletic Assistant is responsible for supporting the delivery of a broad range of physical education programs and activities within the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Peninsula as well as at our partner schools and school districts. You will help plan, develop, and oversee implementation of sports programming. You will also be responsible for developing and maintaining strong and productive relationships with partner organizations and schools in order to expand our impact and reach.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent
  • Working towards degree program in relevant field that includes but not limited to Sports Management, Youth Program Development, Kinesiology
  • Passion for working with youth
  • Prior coaching and officiating experience
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Group leadership skills, including an understanding of group dynamics
  • Demonstrated organizational, staff, and project management abilities
  • CPR and First Aid Certifications recommended (if not, to be completed within 90 days of start date)

Responsibilities

  • Help plan and oversee the administration of the Physical Education and Athletic program and activities for summer program
  • Plan, develop and implement recreational sports activities at the clubhouse to engage youth in healthy physical fitness activities and to develop long term fitness habits
  • Use athletics to engage youth in a process of continuous growth through tracking and building athletic skill and physical fitness
  • Develop youth understanding and practice of good sportsmanship and teamwork through competition and direct instruction
  • Contribute to clubhouse program objectives consistent with organizational goals and mission.
  • Oversee the provision of the day-to-day Physical Education program activities in accordance with established standards and goals in partnership with the Athletics Manager.
  • Ensure that members are encouraged to participate in a variety of program activities and receive instruction and constructive feedback to develop sportsmanship, teamwork and skills in Physical Education and Athletics.
  • Demonstrate leadership to assure good conduct, safety, and development of members
  • Help youth discover their passions and steer them into structured programs.
  • Maintain Clubhouse Physical Education and Athletic goals in settings that insure the health and safety of the members.
  • Help to ensure that the site staff understand and effectively communicate standards of the program; that they ensure program areas are safe, well ventilated and well lit; and that the club equipment is maintained in good working condition.
  • Organize and implement an instructional program that will result in students achieving academic success in accordance with the Boys and Girls Club.
  • Support the planning and execution of the physical education classes/intramural lunchtime sports to students at our partner high schools as needed.
  • Identify, select, and modify instructional resources to meet the needs of the students with varying backgrounds, learning styles, and special needs
  • Support the planning and execution of the Redwood City School District sports programs for Middle Schools and High Schools as needed.
  • Ensure the evaluation of Physical Education and Athletic programs on a continual basis in partnership with the Athletics Manager and Director.
  • Ensure the Physical Education and Athletic programs respond to member needs and address their gender and cultural diversity.
  • Determines, measures, evaluates and reports performance metrics.
  • Analyzes similar after-school youth programs in partnership with the Athletics Manager.
  • Allocate and monitor work assigned to program volunteers and staff, providing ongoing feedback and regular appraisal.
  • Identify and support training and development opportunities for assigned volunteers and staff.
  • Partner with the Athletics Department on proper record keeping and reporting including activities and events conducted.
  • Ensure productive and effective performance by all teens and volunteers.
  • Coaching, officiating, and otherwise facilitating athletic leagues, specifically Indoor Soccer, Basketball and Volleyball
  • Teaching the elements of ROOTS: Respect for the Rules, Opponents, Officials, Teammates, and Self.
  • Modeling and teaching participants to Honor the Game through fair play and sportsmanship
  • Developing and structuring sports leagues: evaluating players, creating balanced teams, league rules and schedules.
  • Assist special programs and/or events (i.e. Awards Programs), and/or participate in other unit activities as necessary.
  • Drive Club van periodically.
  • Consult with parents concerning member and club issues.
  • Maintain close daily contact with Club staff (professional and volunteer), Club members, and receive/provide information, discuss issues, explain or interpret guidelines/instructions; instruct, and counsel.
  • Maintain contact as needed with external groups, schools, donors, and member’s parents and others to assist in resolving problems.
  • Perform additional relevant duties as assigned.
