What It's Like The IMS (IP Multimedia Subsystem) team within T-Mobile’s Network Technology organization plays a critical role in enabling and evolving the core network services that power voice and messaging for millions of users. By architecting and supporting scalable, resilient IMS infrastructure, the team ensures seamless, high-quality communication experiences across the country. From launching next-gen services like VoLTE and VoNR to integrating automation and AI for operational efficiency, IMS directly drives service innovation and reliability. The team's work is foundational to T-Mobile’s ability to deliver differentiated customer experiences and maintain its leadership in network performance.

Requirements

  • At least 18 years of age
  • Legally authorized to work in the United States
  • Must be actively enrolled in a Bachelors or Graduate degree program
  • Employees of T-Mobile or Metro by T-Mobile are ineligible for Internships
  • Employer does not sponsor work visas for this position. Note that this also applies to individuals who are students in F-1 status who desire sponsorship after they complete their education.
  • Ability to learn and gain an understanding of the T-Mobile voice core network
  • Ability to learn and understand Session Initiation Protocol (SIP)
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Intermediate skill level with off software, specifically presentations
  • Should understand basic telecommunications, wireless communications
  • Able work on databases such as SQL and be able to apply knowledge to new systems

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in: Grafana, Splunk, Elastic Search, Service Now, Tableau, Power BI, Databases like SQL

Responsibilities

  • Define, validate, and maintain system and functional requirements in collaboration with internal stakeholders and external vendors.
  • Engage with vendor teams to identify and document key platform capabilities, dependencies, and integration needs.
  • Support functional testing and quality assurance activities, ensuring key features meet performance and reliability expectations.
  • Develop and execute automation scripts, data queries, and configuration tools using appropriate languages and platforms to support network operations or feature validation.
  • Document technical designs and decisions using Confluence, and prepare clear, concise presentations for review with leadership and technical teams.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with Design, QA, and Operations teams to drive alignment and support end-to-end solution delivery.
  • Perform additional technical tasks or contribute to special projects as assigned by leadership.
  • Support Telecom Network Architecture Projects: Collaborate with Senior Engineers to understand IMS Core network components and assist in designing scalable, resilient voice and messaging service architectures.
  • Execute a Focused Technical Project: Lead or contribute to a scoped project involving design, implementation (including coding if applicable), validation, and documentation of a network-related feature or tool.
  • Develop Automation or Monitoring Tools: Leverage scripting or programming skills (e.g., Python, Ansible) to build or improve automation workflows, configuration audit tools, or telemetry dashboards aligned with IMS operations.
  • Participate in Design Reviews and Presentations: Prepare and present technical findings, solutions, and recommendations to peers and leadership, effectively translating complex topics for various audiences.
  • Gain Hands-On Exposure to Core Systems: Learn about voice services infrastructure (e.g., SIP, IMS, VoLTE, containers, Kubernetes), shadowing engineers to understand real-world network evolution practices and processes.
