About The Position

The ACLU seeks an Undergraduate Intern on the National Advocacy Institute team within the Executive Department of the ACLU’s National office in New York City . The Internship can be remote or hybrid with travel required for in-person programming. Qualifying applicants must currently be matriculated undergraduate students or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience and must be based in the U.S. for the entire duration of the internship. The Team: The ACLU National Advocacy Institute is a program for high-school students from across the United States to participate in a learning experience for the next generation of social justice advocates. At National Advocacy Institute, students engage directly with ACLU lawyers, lobbyists, community activists, and other experts working to defend the civil rights and civil liberties that are critical to a free and open society. In Summer 2026, the National Advocacy Institute is celebrating its 10 th anniversary and will be running one 10-day residential program for high school students in Washington, D.C. (ages 15-18): Program Dates: Monday, July 20 th – Wednesday, July 29 th 2026

Requirements

  • Must currently be matriculated undergraduate students or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience and must be based in the U.S. for the entire duration of the internship
  • An interest in youth-programming, activism, and advocacy.
  • Be committed to advancing the mission of the ACLU Center and embed the principles of equity, inclusion and belonging in their work by demonstrating commitment to diversity with an approach that respects and values multiple perspectives
  • Be committed to work collaboratively and respectfully toward resolving obstacles and conflict
  • Full-time internships require a commitment of 10 consecutive weeks.
  • This internship has a start date of: May 26th or June 8th
  • A stipend is available for students who are lawfully authorized to work.
  • Arrangements can be made with educational institutions for work/study or course credit.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working with young people is preferred (camp counselor, Residential Advisors, mentoring, etc.), but not required
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite

Responsibilities

  • Process student enrollments and flag important student accessibility and accommodations requests
  • Assist with data entry, tracking, and other database related needs
  • Track collaboration with outside vendors supporting NAI
  • Support communications to students and families
  • Work on program planning and logistics, including the opportunity to plan and facilitate whole aspects of the program
