About The Position

An internship with American Family Insurance is a great opportunity to build your skillset and explore your career interests. Our summer student internship is a 10 to 14 week program that starts in mid to late May and ends in August. During your internship, you'll work on impactful projects that make a difference at our company, with our customers, and in our communities. You'll also gain exposure to different areas of our business and have numerous opportunities for networking and coaching. Interns may be eligible for a one-time hiring bonus to assist with housing costs depending upon proximity to an AmFam office location. As a Data Engineer Intern on our Data Platform team, you will assist in building and maintaining our Google Cloud Platform (GCP) data infrastructure that powers analytics and AI development across the organization. Under the guidance of senior data engineers, you will work on projects involving data pipelines, cloud infrastructure, and platform automation while gaining hands-on experience with modern data engineering tools and practices.

Requirements

  • Must be in student status at an accredited 4-year college or university during the internship, graduating August 2026 or later.
  • Must be pursuing a Bachelors, Masters, or PhD.
  • Major/program must align with internship role.
  • Currently pursuing a degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Information Systems, or related field.
  • Programming experience in Python, SQL, and/or Java.
  • Familiarity with cloud computing concepts and interest in Google Cloud Platform.
  • Understanding of data structures, algorithms, and database concepts.
  • Experience with version control systems (Git) and collaborative development.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to detail.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to work in a collaborative team environment.

Nice To Haves

  • Coursework or projects involving big data technologies, ETL processes, or cloud platforms is preferred.
  • Basic understanding of containerization (Docker) and orchestration concepts is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Develop an understanding of our business, corporate culture and structure to support your work.
  • Contribute creative ideas and strategic approaches in response to changing situations.
  • Design and maintain data pipelines using GCP services such as BigQuery, Dataflow, Cloud Composer/Airflow, and Pub/Sub.
  • Assist in building and optimizing data models and schemas to support analytics and machine learning workloads.
  • Help implement data quality monitoring and validation frameworks.
  • Collaborate with data scientists and AI engineers to ensure data availability and optimize data access patterns.
  • Help maintain infrastructure-as-code using Terraform and implement CI/CD pipelines.
  • Contribute to documentation of data platform architecture, best practices, and standard operating procedures.
  • Monitor and troubleshoot data pipeline performance and reliability issues.
  • Participate in code reviews and team knowledge-sharing sessions.
  • Present project recommendations to the data platform team and stakeholders.
