About The Position

The Summer 2026 Engineering Intern position at Amtrak focuses on Overhead Catenary Systems and will run from May 18th to August 7, 2026. This internship provides an entry point to railway engineering, specifically in Electric Traction, allowing candidates to apply their engineering skills in the field and gain firsthand work experience in electric traction engineering. The role emphasizes the civil/infrastructure side of the railroad electrification system, engaging interns in various aspects of the traction power network, particularly the overhead catenary system and associated infrastructure.

Requirements

  • Must be actively pursuing a degree at an accredited educational institution.
  • Must be pursuing a degree in Engineering (Civil, Structural, Construction Management, Mechanical) from an accredited university/college.
  • Must have at least 1 year of academic undergraduate studies completed or a minimum sophomore status.
  • Must have a cumulative GPA of 2.8 or higher.
  • Available to work a minimum of 20 hours and up to 40 hours per week between Monday-Friday, 8a-6p.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working in a transportation, engineering, manufacturing, industrial or technical environment.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office and AutoCAD software.

Responsibilities

  • Gain general knowledge about railroad overhead catenary system (OCS) infrastructure and traction power assets.
  • Assist in providing technical, logistical, and administrative support for project tasks.
  • Assist in drafting details of electric traction railroad infrastructure components.
  • Receive instruction on engineering safety standards, work procedures, and operating practices.

Benefits

  • Hourly pay range of $17.50 to $35.00 based on factors including school year and program of study.
  • Paid internships include Amtrak rail pass privileges.
  • One (1) PTO day per academic year.
