About The Position

As a Mechanical Engineering Intern at Norfolk Southern, you will have the opportunity to gain valuable real-world experience while pursuing your academic career. This internship is designed to provide you with hands-on exposure to the mechanical operations of our extensive fleet of rail cars and locomotives. You will be placed in one of three settings: the locomotive shop, the car shop, or the office, depending on departmental needs. Throughout your internship, you will develop essential skills related to managing hourly employees who are responsible for maintaining, repairing, and overhauling our fleet. You will become familiar with compliance standards set by Norfolk Southern, the Association of American Railroads, and the Federal Railroad Administration. Additionally, you will participate in various process improvement initiatives, contributing to the overall efficiency and effectiveness of our operations. This internship is ideal for individuals who thrive in a fast-paced environment where no two days are the same, providing a solid foundation for a future career with Norfolk Southern. To be successful in this role, you should possess knowledge and operational skills in AutoCAD, along with proficiency in computer software applications such as Windows, Access, Excel, and Word. A willingness to study reference materials to resolve problems, make suggestions for improvements, and design projects is crucial. General hands-on knowledge of mechanical and electrical equipment is also preferred.
