About The Position

The Fuel Data Analyst Intern (FDS Analyst Intern) will support the Fuel Management System Program at Norfolk Southern (NS), a transformational initiative to optimize the entire fuel lifecycle process, from purchase and receipt to delivery and fuel burn analysis in locomotives. This internship provides an excellent opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a dynamic, data-driven environment while working on projects that streamline and enhance the efficiency of critical fuel management processes. You will be a key player in documenting and analyzing processes, testing new tools, and gaining valuable insight into the fuel efficiency of NS's fleet. This position will allow you to work closely with engineers, analysts, and software developers to support the redesign of tools and systems that enhance the fuel lifecycle management.

Requirements

  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering, Data Science, Analytics, or a related technical field.
  • Some familiarity with mechanical systems and infrastructure or a strong willingness to learn.
  • Basic proficiency in Excel and experience with PowerBI or other data visualization tools.
  • Interest or experience with tools such as PowerPoint, Power Apps, and Power BI.
  • Strong interest in process analysis, documentation, and process improvement.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team, with strong communication skills.
  • Ability to quickly learn new software, systems, and processes.

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with SAS or similar analytical platforms.
  • A keen eye for detail and the ability to organize information clearly.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in documenting the current fuel lifecycle processes, including purchasing, receipt, delivery, and fuel efficiency tracking.
  • Support the analysis of fuel burn and consumption data across the fleet.
  • Assist in creating reports and dashboards using tools such as Excel, PowerBI, and SAS.
  • Assist in User Acceptance Testing (UAT) for new software tools.
  • Work closely with team members across departments, including mechanical engineers, IT specialists, and data analysts.
  • Support the tracking and reporting of fuel consumption and efficiency across locomotives.
  • Assist in gathering requirements and contributing to the design of new processes that improve the fuel lifecycle.
