Sulfate Fertilizer Products Technical & Market Lead
About The Position
PHNX Materials refines coal ash waste into a sulfate-based fertilizer, and a cement substitute (SCM). Our cost-effective, scalable technology delivers a triple win: providing a low cost fertilizer, helping power producers manage coal ash liabilities, and providing concrete companies a cheaper, greener alternative to cement. Founded by Stanford and Tesla alumni, PHNX is on a mission to unlock this abundant domestic natural resource. This is a cross-cutting role for someone with real-world experience in sulfate-based fertilizers and inorganic salts who can help shape how PHNX approaches product definition, market selection, and industrial development. You will work closely with the founding team to bring clarity across questions of market demand, quality requirements, customer expectations, and practical considerations for producing and selling a sulfate-based product at scale. The scope of the role is intentionally flexible and can be tailored to the right person’s background.
Requirements
- Deep familiarity with fertilizer quality requirements and real customer expectations
- Practical understanding of how sulfate-based products are produced, handled, and sold at scale
- Experience bridging technical constraints with commercial realities
- Comfort operating in ambiguous, early-stage environments
Responsibilities
- Advise on market dynamics across agricultural, industrial, and specialty fertilizer applications
- Define target product specifications, including purity, contaminants and handling characteristics
- Guide decisions on which end markets are most attractive and achievable given PHNX’s process
- Provide insight into customer qualification, offtake structures, and distribution considerations
- Advise on industrial-scale considerations such as crystallization, drying, storage, and logistics
- Help evaluate tradeoffs between purity, yield, cost, and market value
- Serve as a technical and commercial thought partner as PHNX transitions from pilot to commercial production
