About The Position

As a SUE Technician, you help protect critical infrastructure by accurately locating and designating underground utilities using EM, GPR, and other tools in accordance with ASCE 38 standards. You support hydrovac test holes, document utility data, collect GPS field information, and collaborate with project teams from planning through close-out—while upholding our strong commitment to safety, quality, and service.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 2+ years in utility locating or SUE-related work.
  • Competency in EM locating and ideally GPR.
  • Ability to read and interpret utility as-builts, drawings, and design plans.
  • Willingness to be cross-trained in hydrovac excavation, GPS surveying, and mapping workflows.
  • Comfortable with outdoor, field-based work, including walking varied terrain, lifting up to 50 lbs, and working in different weather conditions.
  • Valid driver’s license and clean driving record.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively, with good organizational skills and strong verbal/written communication.

Responsibilities

  • Use electromagnetic (EM) locators, ground-penetrating radar (GPR), and other geophysical tools to detect, track, and mark underground utilities, per ASCE 38 quality-level standards.
  • Interpret and correlate utility records, as-builts, and design plans to inform locating strategy.
  • Accurately mark utilities on the ground using standardized color codes and flagging techniques.
  • Maintain daily field documentation (sketches, notes, electronic logs), reporting findings to supervisors and project managers.
  • Conduct utility records research, reviewing GIS data, as-built drawings, and utility plans
  • Compare utility plans and records to field findings; help reconcile discrepancies between planned vs. actual utility configurations.
  • Prepare preliminary sketches, field notes to support design and utility coordination teams.
  • Assist hydrovac crew in soft-dig test holes to safely expose utilities.
  • Measure, document, and photograph exposed utilities (depth, size, material) per ASCE 38-22 requirements.
  • Support backfill, site restoration, and job-site setup per safety and quality protocols.
  • Perform routine maintenance checks on vac-truck equipment and tools.
