Woolpert is hiring a SUE Field Crew Chief to join their dynamic Survey & Geomatics team in Virginia. The SUE Field Crew Chief is responsible for conducting on-site utility designation and locating activities, mapping and marking underground utilities with precision. This role ensures accurate, efficient utility detection to support construction, maintenance, troubleshooting, and mapping projects. Requirements

  • Utilize electromagnetic locating and ground-penetrating radar (GPR) systems to detect and accurately map underground utilities.
  • Must be able to stand for extended periods of time.
  • Must be able to frequently stoop, kneel, crouch and crawl.
  • Good physical condition and the ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions.
  • Must be able to frequently reach with hands and arms, bend and climb and/or balance.
  • Ability to use tools, and equipment. For instance, Shovel, Tape measure, cloth / steel tape, machete, hammer.
  • Must be able to frequently lift and/or move 40 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds.
  • CPU literate: Basic computer skills, including familiarity with data transfer, Microsoft Suite, Email and basic software used in surveying.
  • Must have vision abilities of close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
  • Must already possess work authorization in the country the job is located.

Responsibilities

  • Perform the role of a Utility Locators/Designators and/or SUE Technician.
  • Using electromagnetic locators, ground-penetrating radar (GPR), and other equipment to detect and map underground utilities.
  • Interpret and analyze data from locating equipment to identify utility location, depth, and type, ensuring precise marking and documentation using industry-standard methods.
  • Conduct routine maintenance, calibration, and troubleshooting of locating equipment to maintain accuracy and reliability.
  • Maintain detailed records of utility locations, equipment maintenance, and performance, collaborating with project teams, contractors, and utility companies.
  • Train and mentor SUE Technicians in the use of equipment, safety procedures, and best practices for utility locating.
  • Assigns work, manages crew schedules, maintains project records, monitors work quality, provides performance feedback as needed.
  • Ensure adherence to safety protocols and quality standards.
  • Provide technical guidance and support to team members.
  • Monitor project timelines and budget constraints.
  • Create and maintain training guidelines, materials, and records.
  • Liaise with clients, project managers, and stakeholders to communicate findings and project status.
