About The Position

The SUDCounselor works in the Behavioral Health (BH) department and provides quality substance use treatment services to youth, adults and families within the KANA service region. Works closely with coworkers to coordinate care for clients and contributes to a supportive recovery environment. Offers individual, group, and family counseling; participates in KANA and community-driven substance abuse prevention initiatives.

Requirements

  • Associate's degree from an accredited university in psychology, counseling, or related field preferred.
  • Must be certified or have the ability to become certified as a State of Alaska Chemical Dependency Counselor I within one year of hire.
  • Chemical Dependency Counselor II or equivalent within two years of hire preferred.
  • Two years of work experience in the behavioral health or related field strongly preferred.
  • Familiarity with the dynamics of substance abuse and addiction, recovery and relapse prevention.
  • Experience working in rural Alaska communities/villages strongly preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Support the organization's mission and goals, quality standards, and patient-centered medical home philosophy.
  • Uphold KANA's Code of Ethics by conducting professional activities with honesty, integrity, respect, fairness, and good faith.
  • Develop therapeutic helping-relationships with clients based on unconditional positive regard, empathy, and honesty.
  • Conduct treatment and support activities that emphasize traditional and cultural values.
  • Provide individual, family, and group counseling to youth, adults, and elders.
  • Complete substance use disorder assessments using DSM-5 diagnostic criteria and ASAM placement criteria.
  • Develop a treatment plan with special consideration to cross-cultural and dual diagnosis concerns.
  • Manage and organize 25 direct patient hours per week.
  • Receive direction from the BH Clinical Director regarding clinic processes, programming, and expectations.
  • Participate in and coordinate programs of recovery, such as Family Education Groups and Community Drug & Alcohol Forums.
  • Engage in community outreach, education, and support focusing on substance use disorders.
  • Work closely with community referral sources, including medical providers and local law enforcement agencies.
  • Complete administrative and clinical documentation in a timely manner.
  • Participate in outcome-informed treatment practices.
  • Engage in professional development activities including completion of CEUs towards certification.
  • Attend required training and meetings.
  • Participate as a member of substance-use related committees, coalitions, or forums.
