About The Position

Successor Principal Fellows are high-performing school leaders who have already been selected as the future successor principal at a school with an upcoming principal vacancy (e.g. a principal who is retiring or transitioning). During the transition period before the outgoing principal leaves, Successor Principal Fellows work side by side with the outgoing principal to ensure a smooth transition. Successor Principal Fellows prepare to lead the school by learning from the outgoing principal, auditing school systems and prioritizing improvements, building relationships with staff and families, and participating in key hiring decisions. Successor Principal Fellows may also participate in mini-residencies (1 to 2 weeks) at high-performing schools to learn from principals there.

Requirements

  • Successor Principal Fellows must have already engaged in a principal interview process and been selected as the future principal for the school with an upcoming principal vacancy.
  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in education is required.
  • Strong ability to analyze data to identify root causes and implement strategic solutions.
  • Strong ability to self-reflect on strengths and areas of growth, seek out and implement feedback, and take ownership of one’s own learning and development.
  • Ability to lead and improve complex systems in a school setting.
  • Ability to identify and regulate one’s own emotions, as well as identify and respond effectively to the emotions of others.
  • Ability to manage multiple competing priorities and manage one’s time effectively in order to consistently meet deadlines and achieve priorities.
  • Ability to preserve and remain solutions-oriented in the face of challenges and setbacks.
  • Strong ability to coach teachers on curriculum and instruction and coach other leaders to do the same.
  • Ability to instruct students and manage student behavior and coach other leaders to do the same.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to adjust and adapt to a multitude of situations in the school environment.
  • The ability to move around inside and outside a school to observe classrooms, indoor spaces (e.g. cafeteria) and outdoor spaces (e.g. recess, dismissal line)
  • The ability to sit and type for extended periods
  • The ability to interact with others both in person and virtually for extended periods

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree preferred
  • 3+ years of experience as an instructional leader and 3+ years of experience as a teacher is preferred.
  • Principal certificate is preferred.
