About The Position

The Subsurface Utility Locator is responsible for performing engineering-grade utility locating in support of design, planning, and construction projects. This role goes beyond standard one-call locates and focuses on accurately identifying, mapping, and documenting underground utilities using advanced locating methods, GPS/GNSS technology, and GIS field applications to support engineers and project teams.

Requirements

  • 3+ years of hands-on subsurface utility locating experience, with emphasis on engineering or design-level locates
  • Proven experience operating Trimble GPS/GNSS equipment for utility data collection
  • Working knowledge of ESRI Field Maps or similar GIS/mobile mapping applications
  • Strong understanding of underground utility systems, mapping standards, and tolerance requirements
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, utility maps, and survey data
  • Familiarity with Subsurface Utility Engineering (SUE) concepts and confidence levels
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions
  • Ability to walk job sites, lift locating equipment, and work in uneven terrain
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to travel to project sites as needed

Nice To Haves

  • Experience supporting civil, transportation, or infrastructure design projects
  • Exposure to SUE Level A support (test holes) or coordination with vacuum excavation teams
  • CAD or GIS data review experience
  • Background working with engineering consultants or public agencies

Responsibilities

  • Perform engineering and design-level subsurface utility locates in accordance with project requirements and industry best practices
  • Identify, locate, and document underground utilities including gas, electric, water, sewer, telecom, and fiber
  • Collect horizontal and vertical utility data with high accuracy using Trimble GPS/GNSS equipment
  • Capture, update, and manage field data using ESRI Field Maps or similar GIS platforms
  • Interpret utility records, as-builts, survey data, and design plans to support accurate locating
  • Assess site conditions, congested corridors, and conflicting records to determine confidence levels and limitations
  • Document locate quality, uncertainty, and conflicts clearly for engineers and designers
  • Coordinate with project managers, surveyors, and engineering staff to ensure data accuracy and consistency
  • Follow company safety protocols and industry standards (including applicable SUE Level B/A practices, where required)
  • Prepare thorough field notes, sketches, photos, and digital deliverables as part of project documentation
