About The Position

Dorchester County Public Schools is currently accepting Substitute Teacher applications for the 2025 -2026 school year. The Guest Educator is responsible for implementing lesson plans and maintaining classroom order in the absence of the regular educator (teacher). This role ensures continuity in student learning and upholds school policies and procedures. Performance Responsibilities: Follow lesson plans provided by the regular teacher to facilitate classroom instruction. Maintain a safe, respectful, and inclusive classroom environment. Manage student behavior and enforce classroom rules. Take attendance and report any issues or incidents to school administration. Leave a summary of the day’s activities for the returning educator. Adapt teaching methods to meet the needs of students when necessary. Supervise students in classrooms, hallways, cafeterias, and other school settings as needed. Uphold school rules, administrative procedures, and board policies. Qualifications: Must be 18 years of age. High school diploma or equivalent (Associate’s degree preferred). Prior teaching or childcare experience preferred. Strong communication and classroom management skills. Flexibility and adaptability to different classroom environments and grade levels. Must pass a criminal background check and fingerprinting (fee: $40). Must complete the Safe Schools Training Program. Must attend the DCPS Substitute Workshop. Must work a minimum of 28 hours per month (Equivalency: 4 days per month). Working Conditions: May work in various schools and grade levels (K–12). Must be available on short notice. May involve standing for extended periods and light lifting. 2025 - 2026 Pay Schedule: High School diploma or Associate's degree: $18.00 per hour Bachelor's degree: $20.00 per hour Teaching License or Retired Teacher: $23.00 per hour Hourly rate increases if a substitute teacher is in the same teaching assignment for 25+ days. If a substitute fulfills an assignment for an Instructional Assistant, IA-Behavioral Specialist, Physical Management Assistant, or Student Support Monitor, the rate of pay is $16.41/hour. Dorchester County Public Schools does participate in the Maryland Healthy Working Families Act. The Maryland Healthy Working Families Act (MHWFA) requires Dorchester County Public Schools to provide one (1) hour of paid sick leave for every 30 hours that an employee works, subject to the provisions of the Act. The paid sick leave is paid out each month during the school year.
