About The Position

The Substitute Teacher plays a critical role in maintaining instructional continuity and fostering a positive learning environment across various subjects and grade levels. This position ensures that student learning remains uninterrupted during teacher absences, providing consistent support for student progress and contributing to the overall school community. The substitute will adapt quickly to diverse classroom settings, ensuring students continue to progress through relevant content standards and are prepared for the next level of study and college-level coursework.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Education or a related academic field.
  • Valid Washington D.C. teaching credential or ability to attain credential by June 2026.
  • Experience working in Urban Education.
  • Knowledge of K-12 teaching standards and frameworks.
  • Ability to quickly learn and adapt to various subject matters, classroom procedures, and student needs.
  • Strong classroom management skills and ability to maintain a positive learning environment.
  • A love for working with young people.

Responsibilities

  • Provide an engaging and consistent learning environment conducive to student success, adhering to lesson plans provided by the absent teacher or general school guidelines.
  • Implement a variety of instructional methodologies, curriculum resources, and materials as outlined in daily plans to ensure student engagement and understanding.
  • Manage classroom routines and procedures effectively, maintaining a classroom atmosphere conducive to learning for all students.
  • Take student attendance accurately and promptly.
  • Assist in general building supervision and discipline of students outside of the classroom, as needed.
  • Collaborate with Student Life team members and Student Support to facilitate Falcon Hour.
  • Integrate Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) frameworks and strategies to foster a supportive and inclusive classroom environment.
  • Monitor and report student progress to the absent teacher upon their return, providing clear and concise summaries of the day's activities and any notable student behaviors or academic needs.
  • Identify special needs of students and seek additional support from school staff (e.g., student support team, counselors) as needed.
  • Communicate with administration and relevant school staff, as necessary, regarding classroom matters or student concerns.
  • Collaborate with department heads and other teachers to understand curriculum expectations and school-wide instructional strategies.
  • Participate in professional learning opportunities, staff meetings, and other sponsored activities as directed by administration, especially during periods without immediate classroom assignments.
  • Assist in data analysis and professional development planning or delivery to support the School Improvement Plan and the Professional Learning Plan, as assigned.
  • Maintain and submit necessary records, including attendance, student progress notes, and any incident reports.
  • Support the administration and proctoring of school-wide assessments or other relevant student evaluations as required by the school.
  • Adhere to the professional and ethical standards as outlined in the SEED PCS Staff Handbook.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by school leadership.
