About The Position

The Teacher for the Hearing Impaired is responsible for providing diagnosis and remediation for students with hearing problems. This role involves implementing screening and referral procedures to identify students needing hearing evaluations, reviewing available medical and audiological information, and obtaining updated information to share with parents, teachers, and other appropriate staff. The teacher will also gather diagnostic information through formalized testing and collaborate with support staff, parents, and other professionals regarding student educational needs. Additionally, the teacher will plan instruction as needed per Individual Education Plans (IEPs), develop long-range goals and short-term objectives for students' IEPs, and record student progress as required.

Requirements

  • A valid Virginia teaching license with an endorsement in teacher of the hearing impaired.
  • A license from CAID (Conference on American Instructors of the Deaf).
  • Competency in administering and interpreting tests for hearing impaired.
  • A working knowledge of group application systems and skill in manual communication.
  • Knowledge of local, state, and national facilities for serving the hearing impaired.

Responsibilities

  • Implement screening and/or referral procedures to identify students needing hearing evaluations.
  • Review available medical/audiological information pertaining to the student's performance and probable use of hearing.
  • Obtain diagnostic information through formalized testing.
  • Gather information from teachers and parents to assist in assessing specific student problems.
  • Collaborate with support staff, parents, other professionals, and agencies regarding student educational needs.
  • Teach students who are hearing, deaf, and hard-of-hearing.
  • Plan instruction as needed per Individual Education Plans (IEPs).
  • Develop long-range goals and short-term objectives for students' individualized education program (IEP).
  • Develop appropriate accommodations and services for students' individualized education program (IEP).
  • Record student progress and other data as required per IEPs and school monitoring procedures.
  • Schedule and group students according to the nature and severity of their condition.
  • Perform other duties and assume other responsibilities as assigned by the Principal.
