OCDE's Deaf and Hard of Hearing (D/HH) Total Communication Program serves deaf and hard-of-hearing students in grades 7-12. OCDE provides the educational staff for our middle and high school programs. Our classes are located on the campuses of Venado Middle School and University High School, both located in the city of Irvine. This highly specialized staff must be able to utilize a total communication approach which employs conceptually accurate signed English as the primary signing system with the support of American Sign Language (ASL) and English-based sign systems. Our students are educated with their hearing classmates to the maximum extent, which is beneficial to the students. Career and vocational education is an integral part of the program and is infused into the curriculum. Motivating students to develop the skills, attitudes, and knowledge needed to realize their fullest potential is one of the most important aspects of the program.
