About The Position

The Substitute Security Officer position involves working within the Moses Lake School District to ensure the safety and security of school buildings, grounds, and parking lots. The role is limited to 600 hours per school year and requires effective communication and cooperation with students, parents, and staff. The officer will patrol assigned areas, respond to emergencies, and maintain security records while modeling nondiscriminatory practices.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent, higher education preferred.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective, cooperative, and positive working relationships with students, parents, and fellow staff members.
  • Ability to qualify for Moses Lake Police Department Reserve Officer training program.
  • Possess a valid Washington State Driver's License with a demonstrated safe driving record.
  • Knowledge of security procedures.
  • Ability to maintain records.
  • Ability to apply appropriate discipline in accordance with district policies and procedures.
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive relationships with local law enforcement agencies.
  • Ability and willingness to complete Public School Safety and Security Training.
  • Ability and willingness to complete Safety Care training.

Responsibilities

  • Patrols and monitors assigned areas of the school buildings, grounds and parking lots to deter, detect, report and stop violations of the law and/or school board policies.
  • Detects, investigates and reports unauthorized or suspicious persons, vehicles and activities.
  • Assists administrators and staff in crisis and emergency situations.
  • Supervises and directs pupil movement.
  • Mediates conflicts among students or staff when necessary, using de-escalation techniques.
  • Reports any disciplinary issues or safety concerns to the school administration.
  • Notifies the administrative staff, police, fire department, or other appropriate authorities of security or emergency situations.
  • Investigates student violations of school board policies and prepares reports of the results.
  • Works with school administrators and law enforcement officials in handling serious student offenses and law violations.
  • Testifies in court and at School Board Disciplinary Review Committee hearings as required.
  • Assists with emergency drills.
  • Maintains security records, logs and reports.
  • Attends and successfully completes all staff development training as required by state law or directed by the Security Department.
  • Models nondiscriminatory practices in all activities.
  • Provides supervision of parking lots.
  • Works with custodians when appropriate.
  • Maintains district-assigned email account; reads and responds to messages regularly.
  • Accepts responsibility for assignments and outcomes.
  • Works cooperatively with other staff; maintains positive, respectful relationships and engagements.
  • Works after school extra-curricular activities/events as directed.
  • Interprets as needed if an individual possesses multiple language skills.
  • Maintains excellent attendance.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
