About The Position

The substitute position provides security services on an as-needed basis, supporting school principals and district administration. This role is essential for maintaining a safe environment for students and staff throughout the school district.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent required
  • 10+ years of Law Enforcement Experience
  • Knowledge of security measures, fire prevention, and crowd control. Ability to maintain order and to work with groups and individuals on matters of security and crisis management.
  • Strong organizational and multitasking skills, with an ability to:

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to remain calm, polite, and professional under pressure

  • Strong observational skills to proactively identify potential issues
  • Must be able to use technology efficiently, such as computers, two-way radio, video monitors, buzz-in systems, electronic surveillance equipment, and other devices selected by the district to be part of the school security system.
  • Requires heavy lifting and sustained physical activity
  • Valid driver's license required
  • Required criminal history background check and proof of US citizenship or legal resident alien status.
  • Current residency in New Jersey, approved residency waiver, or the candidate agrees to obtain residency within one year of employment.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor's Degree in Criminal Justice or related field preferred
  • Experience working in a school setting or knowledge of school operations is preferred

Responsibilities

  • Patrol and monitor hallways, stairwells, restrooms, outside areas, and other unsupervised spaces to ensure the safety of students and staff, as well as the security of the school facilities.
  • Conducts regular inspections of windows, doors, and other points of entry to ensure that they are secure.
  • Maintain smooth traffic flow during transitions; assist students with timely arrival to classes and designated areas.
  • Supervise students during breakfast, lunch, arrival, and dismissal periods.
  • Remove disruptive students from classrooms when necessary and assist staff in managing behavioral incidents.
  • Support school personnel, police, and emergency responders during emergencies or disruptive situations.
  • Greet and assist visitors, verify identification, and ensure proper compliance with visitor procedures.
  • Monitor school parking lots at times and locations.
  • Challenge and escort unauthorized visitors from the school premises.
  • Report disciplinary infractions, unauthorized visitors, and acts of vandalism to the Administration.
  • Immediately notify administration, police, or emergency personnel of emergencies or potentially dangerous or unusual situations, in accordance with Policy and Regulation 8441: Care of III and Injured Pupils.
  • Report suspected cases of substance abuse, child abuse or neglect, severe medical or social conditions, potential suicide, or individuals appearing to be under the influence of alcohol or anabolic steroids.
  • Participates in the district's/school's emergency and crisis management plan when present.
  • Model appropriate behavior and professionalism, promoting student responsibility and maintaining a professional appearance.
  • Demonstrate ethical and professional conduct when interacting with students, parents, staff, and community partners.
  • Protect the confidentiality of student and staff information and use discretion within legal and policy guidelines.
  • Comply with all applicable federal and state laws, codes, regulations, Board of Education policies and procedures, and contractual obligations.
  • Records all observations and conditions, and reports unusual occurrences or property damage to superiors and documents rule violations.
  • Submits written reports of all incidents of vandalism, violence, illegal drug activity, and security violations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Superintendent, District Security Coordinator, or Building Principal.
