About The Position

The Substitute School Nurse will work in cooperation with the school physician, other school noncertified nurses, members of the staff, parents, and community health professionals to ensure a healthy school climate and to minimize absence due to illness. This role involves conducting health services and screening programs as required by law and/or board policies, scheduling and supervising health surveys of students and staff, and providing emergency care in case of sudden illness or injury. The nurse will maintain up-to-date health records on all students and help prevent and control communicable diseases. Additionally, the nurse will confer with and advise students, parents, and staff members on health and safety matters, assist in the identification and placement of students with disabilities, and promote a healthy and safe school environment.

Requirements

  • Valid New Jersey Registered Nurse Certification.
  • Demonstrated expertise in school health nursing practice and emergency procedures.
  • Knowledge of child growth and development, community and family dynamics, current health issues, and wellness education.
  • Knowledge of community health and social services resources.
  • Required criminal history background check and proof of U.S. citizenship or legal resident alien status.

Responsibilities

  • Works in cooperation with the school physician and other health professionals to ensure a healthy school climate.

  • Maintains up-to-date health records on all students.
  • Helps prevent and control communicable diseases.
  • Notifies principal for immediate examination of students under the influence of substances.
  • Advises students, parents, and staff on health and safety matters.
  • Assists in the identification and placement of students with disabilities.
  • Participates in the development of a comprehensive health education curriculum.
  • Promotes a healthy and safe school environment.
  • Administers prescribed medication to students.
  • Collaborates with community health agencies.
  • Provides special health care for students with disabilities.
  • Assists in the preparation of the school's health budget.
  • Maintains professional competence through in-service education.
  • Develops and maintains the annual School Nursing Plan.
  • Prepares health and safety reports as required.
  • Reports any suspicion of child abuse.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
