About The Position

Under the direction and supervision of a certificated school nurse and Health Services Director, the Substitute School Nurse works as a member of the building and district health services team to meet the needs of individual students, coordinate and carry out health care services to the building as necessary, within the scope and standards of nursing practice.

Requirements

  • Current WA State RN or LPN license.
  • Washington State Driver’s License.
  • Computer knowledge and experience with electronic record keeping
  • Ability to exercise good judgment and manage time well
  • Positive, motivating, and caring attitude towards students.
  • Knowledge and experience maintaining confidentiality consistent with HIPPA & FERPA.
  • Relates positively to youth and adults of varying socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds.

Nice To Haves

  • Pediatric background and familiarity with childhood health conditions preferred

Responsibilities

  • Perform necessary medical procedures under the training and supervision of the District Certificated School Nurse. These include, but are not limited to, diabetes care, tube feeding, suctioning and catheterization, and monitoring seizure disorders.
  • Assist the Certificated School Nurse in implementing individual health care plans for students with health care needs and update appropriate District staff as needed regarding changes or updates.
  • Perform professional nursing tasks as needed, including emergency services and supportive care, adhering to the scope and standards of nursing practice
  • Supervise designated school staff and participate in the administration of oral medication to students, and maintain paperwork as needed.
  • Perform school mandated requirements with immunization and screenings
  • Address health care concerns of special education students, including personal hygiene care.
  • Assist with state-required screenings, ie. Vision, Hearing, and Scoliosis.
  • Assist with the maintenance of health and immunization records.
  • Work in cooperation with certificated and classified staff to promote a medically effective, friendly, and caring atmosphere for students and parents.
  • Establish relationships that enhance communication with district personnel.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
