About The Position

The Substitute School Nurse is responsible for promoting the health and well-being of students and staff within the school community. This role involves providing direct nursing care, administering medications, managing chronic health conditions, and promoting health education and prevention initiatives.

Requirements

  • Candidates must possess a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree from an accredited institution.
  • Candidates must hold a valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of Virginia, or be an LPN (Licensed Practical Nurse).
  • Candidates should have CPR and Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • Strong assessment, critical thinking, and communication skills are essential.
  • Candidates should demonstrate proficiency in administering medications, providing first aid, and managing medical emergencies.
  • Knowledge of state health regulations, immunization requirements, and electronic health record systems is desired.
  • Candidates must exhibit compassion, empathy, and professionalism when interacting with students, parents, and staff.

Responsibilities

  • Provide direct nursing care to students and staff members as needed, including assessment, treatment, and follow-up for illness and injuries.
  • Administer medications and treatments according to physician orders and school policies, ensuring accuracy and compliance with state regulations.
  • Monitor and manage chronic health conditions of students, such as asthma, diabetes, and allergies, in collaboration with healthcare providers and parents.
  • Conduct health screenings and assessments, including vision and hearing screenings, to identify health concerns and facilitate referrals for further evaluation and treatment.
  • Develop and implement individualized health care plans and emergency action plans for students with special health needs, in coordination with parents and school staff.
  • Educate students, families, and staff on health promotion, disease prevention, and safety practices, including hygiene, nutrition, and injury prevention.
  • Collaborate with school administrators, teachers, counselors, and other healthcare professionals to promote a healthy school environment and address health-related concerns.
  • Maintain accurate and confidential health records for students, ensuring compliance with privacy laws and school policies.
  • Participate in professional development activities to stay current with nursing best practices, health trends, and school health regulations.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
