About The Position

Substitute Paraprofessional will, under general supervision, perform a variety of instructional and personal services for students with physical, mental, and/or developmental delays. May provide services to students with specialized needs and assist students who require personal and health care. Monitors and records student behavior and performance. They will assist the instructor with their classroom responsibilities as instructed. This is an on-call position, Monday thru Friday.

Requirements

  • Paraprofessionals are required to have a high school diploma or its equivalent and demonstrate proficiency in reading, writing, math and classroom instruction.
  • Employees are required to meet the requirements either by holding an AA degree or higher, the knowledge of and the ability to assist in the instruction of reading, writing and mathematics.
  • Knowledge of: Basic principles and practices of child development and child guidance
  • Knowledge of: Basic emergency, first aid and health care techniques
  • Knowledge of: Classroom procedures and equipment
  • Knowledge of: Methods and techniques of instruction
  • Knowledge of: General needs and behavior of children
  • Knowledge of: Methods and technique of lifting and moving children with physical limitations
  • Knowledge of: Personal hygiene practices
  • Knowledge of: Emergency procedures as they relate to obtaining professional medical and safety assistance
  • Knowledge of: Appropriate techniques for the physical management of special education students
  • Knowledge of: Correct English usage, spelling, grammar and punctuation
  • Knowledge of: Conflict resolution methods and techniques
  • Knowledge of: Procedures and practices of classroom and playground safety
  • Knowledge of: Oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to: Assist with instruction and related activities of the assigned learning environment
  • Ability to: Reinforce instruction to individuals or small groups of students as directed by the teacher
  • Ability to: Lift children in and out of school buses, wheelchairs, braces and other orthopedic equipment
  • Ability to: Assist students by providing proper examples, emotional support, friendly attitude and general guidance
  • Ability to: Demonstrate an understanding, patient and receptive attitude toward children with special needs
  • Ability to: Conform to and support the assigned teacher’s style of classroom management
  • Ability to: Effectively assist teacher in responding to students’ emergencies
  • Ability to: Print and writing legibly
  • Ability to: Learn methods and procedures to be followed in an instructional environment
  • Ability to: Assist in supervising and disciplining assigned students according to approved policies and procedures
  • Ability to: Work independently with minimal direction
  • Ability to: Provide assistance to parents and other staff members in a helpful, courteous and timely manner
  • Ability to: Maintain confidentiality of privileged information obtained in the course of work
  • Ability to: Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing
  • Ability to: Understand and follow oral and written directions
  • One year of experience in working with school-age children in an organized education, health, childcare, or other structured setting or related experience.

Responsibilities

  • Under direct supervision of the instructor, helps the operation of a school class and the supervision of students
  • Prepares instructional materials
  • Assists students individually and in small group with material previously presented by the instructor
  • Assists with organization of reference and resource materials and room displays
  • May take roll and keep attendance records
  • Assists in maintaining order in the classroom or on the playground
  • May operate audiovisual equipment and/or office machines
  • Performs other routine duties as needed.
  • Provide services to students with specialized needs; assist students who require personal and health care; may aid with personal hygiene and other needs
  • Assists in maintaining a clean and orderly learning environment
  • Perform related duties and responsibilities as required
  • Prepare materials for classroom and instructional use as assigned by classroom instructor
  • Set up work areas, displays and exhibits
  • Perform general clerical duties and maintain records in support of an instructor
  • Participate in special programs and events aimed at early childhood development.
  • May be required to assist with transportation needs for children, including obtaining appropriate driving certifications.
  • Assist in other program areas as needed and assume additional duties as assigned.
