About The Position

ASHTABULA COUNTY EDUCATIONAL SERVICE CENTER Substitute Paraprofessional Reports To: Principal, Special Education Supervisor or Pupil Services Director Summary Assist teacher with classroom duties and/or monitor students as assigned. Assist the administration in implementing all procedures and rules governing student life and conduct and develop reasonable rules of classroom behavior and procedure. Effectively manage the classroom and individual student behavior to maintain a good learning environment Note: The below lists are not ranked in order of importance.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED)
  • Ability to work effectively with others.
  • Ability to communicate ideas and directives clearly and effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Effective active listening skills.
  • Organizational and problem solving skills.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Ability to be flexible and adaptable to changing situations.
  • Student management skills.
  • Basic first aid.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain a safe environment and insure safety and well-being of students.
  • Work with students both individually and in small groups reinforcing skills taught by the teacher and/or therapists; maintain open communication regarding student’s progress and concerns.
  • Assist students with classwork and make-up work.
  • Assist with recess supervision, restroom breaks, etc.
  • Promote good social relationships between students.
  • Distribute communiqués to be sent home with students.
  • Assist students with toiletry needs as necessary.
  • Duplicate materials for class.
  • Make contacts with the public with tact and diplomacy.
  • Maintain respect at all times for confidential information.
  • Interact in a positive manner with staff, students, and parents.
  • Provide assistance to classroom teacher.
  • Maintain and improve professional competence by attending professional growth seminars, workshops, etc.
  • Attend meetings and inservices as required
  • Promote good public relations.
  • Prepare materials for class projects.
  • Maintain confidentiality of personally identifiable data and abide by other regulations.
  • Be proactive in seeking information to help understand the student’s ability/disability.
  • Implement behavioral management strategies as determined by the teacher/IEP team.
  • Assist with special school projects.
  • Accompany and assist student on field trips and other off campus school activities as necessary
  • Administer first aid to students as necessary.
  • Develop correspondence, including reports and such other correspondence as may be required.
  • Prepare supply, material, and equipment requisitions as directed by immediate supervisor.
  • Respond to routine questions and requests in an appropriate manner.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the classroom teacher or supervisor.
  • Serve as a role model for students.
