About The Position

The Substitute Paraeducator - Special Education position is an on-call, at-will role with no guarantee of hours or work. The primary purpose of this job is to assist the teacher with the implementation of an educational program for special education students by providing instruction as assigned, behavior management, preparation of classroom materials, and physical care for students. The position reports to the Human Resources Building Administrator and involves working under the general direction of the building administrator and specific direction of the classroom teacher.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or its recognized equivalent (GED).
  • Ability and desire to work on a constant basis - minimum 1 time a month.
  • Desire and ability to work and communicate effectively with staff, students, and parents from diverse cultural backgrounds.
  • Ability to be flexible and adaptable, as assignments may change on short notice and may require coverage in various classrooms or grade levels throughout the day.
  • For long-term assignments: Associate's degree (or higher) from an accredited institution of higher education; or 72 quarter credits from an accredited institution of higher education; or passing score on a Washington state recognized assessment (455).

Responsibilities

  • Assists with implementation of behavior management techniques, educational and vocational instruction, and vocational placement programs.
  • Instructs students in large or small groups or one-to-one as assigned by and under the direction of the special education teacher.
  • Prepares materials for use by student, teacher, and parents; types, hand draws, reproduces, and collates.
  • Assists special education paras with students with hygiene and personal needs, such as toileting, lifting, washing, and feeding.
  • Administers or assists special education teacher with administration of assessment instruments.
  • Assists with maintaining class during special education teacher's absence.
  • Supervises students during lunch, recess, on and off the bus, assembly, and to other building locations.
  • Assists student(s) with transport and/or accompany student(s) in transition activities.
  • Assists with management of high-risk students that are severely emotionally disturbed and/or dangerous.
  • Remains confidential regarding student/school matters.
  • Works as a professional in a collaborative team to support continued learning.
  • Creates a positive rapport with students and fellow staff members.
  • Performs other duties as assigned as requested by the building administrator, supervisor, or teacher.
