The Substitute Paraeducator position involves replacing regular employees who are absent, under the direction of a building administrator or certificated teacher. The Paraeducator supervises and instructs individual and/or small groups of students within a classroom setting. Guest Paraeducators will receive a variety of assignments and are expected to be available on a day-to-day, on-call basis, any day of the week, Monday through Friday. An automated online system is used to arrange assignments in advance, with early morning phone calls starting as early as 5:00 am.

  • Maintain a positive learning environment and relate to all students, parents, and colleagues.
  • Provide small group specially designed instruction and one-on-one instruction with students.
  • Assess and record student progress while managing resources.
  • Assist in the delivery of education programs and testing materials related to students.
  • Utilize escalation prevention and de-escalation techniques.
  • Interact with students and maintain awareness of individual student emotional and physical needs.
  • Present and implement behavior management programs as directed by the teacher.
  • Address students' educational goals and personal needs, including feeding, dressing, diapering, toileting, hygiene, or other medical needs.
  • Complete and maintain relevant records and documentation.
  • Assist students and teachers as needed.
  • Proof of High School completion (diploma or transcripts must be on file).
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Ability to establish effective working relationships with students, staff, parents, and the public.
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise sound, independent judgment.
  • Flexibility in working with students and staff in various classroom settings.
  • Ability to follow directions with minimal supervision and follow a provided lesson plan.
  • Ability to manage students' physical needs.
  • Effective communication skills in English, both verbal and written.
  • Background check through Washington State Patrol.
  • Availability to work all hours of a student day starting as early as 7:00 am until 4:30 pm.
  • Flexibility to adjust schedules on short notice.
  • Ability to operate a computer and other assistive technology.
  • Experience working with students with special needs/high needs.
  • Ability to provide medical or health services such as diapering, toileting, and feeding.
  • Physically strong enough to assist with restraint and lifting students.
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure.
  • Ability to communicate in a second language.
  • Experience working with a diverse student population.
  • Ability to show multicultural and ethnic understanding and sensitivity.
  • Pay Rate: $24.94 - $26.19/hour
  • Temporary/Hourly assignment with varying hours.
