Requirements

  • SCOE Substitute Para Educator Application Copy of SCOE Para Educator Proficiency Test certificate. Applicants who meet the minimum requirements but did not submit a copy of the SCOE Para Educator Proficiency Test certificate or an equivalent will receive an email invitation to attend the testing. OR one of the following: SCOE ESSA/NCLB test certificate, CBEST or transcripts showing date AA Degree or higher was awarded.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Any combination equivalent to: graduation from high school and some experience working with children and/or individuals with disabilities is preferred.
  • All VOLUNTEER work must be stated in DETAIL in the "Record of Work Experience" section of the application.
  • Lifting light-medium weighted objects.
  • Dexterity of hands and fingers to manipulate specialized apparatus and standard office and classroom equipment.
  • Bending at the waist, kneeling or crouching to assist students.
  • Sitting to read a variety of materials and monitor student activities.
  • Seeing to read a variety of materials and monitor student activities.
  • Hearing and speaking to exchange information.
  • Some positions may require bilingual skills in a designated second language.
  • Some positions in this class may be required to possess sign language skills.

Responsibilities

  • Assist a certificated teacher in providing instruction to individual or small groups of severely handicapped students in a classroom
  • Monitor and report student progress regarding behavior and performance
  • Assist students in developing various self-help, social and community skills
