About The Position

Is responsible for direct child care, appraisal and follow-up of case load. Prepares health care plans for involved students and supervises the implementation of required health care procedures.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's or associate's degree in nursing.
  • License from the State of Arkansas to practice as an LPN.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.
  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of students, parents, staff, administrators, and the general public.
  • Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference.
  • Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
  • Ability to measure accurately, especially as applied to dosages, is essential.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.
  • Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory to nursing program; ability to plan and implement practices based on department, district, and school objectives and the needs and abilities of students to whom assigned.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, peers, parents and community; ability to speak clearly and concisely in written or oral communication.

Responsibilities

  • Observes special education students on a regular basis to detect health needs.
  • Screens students for health defects, including height, weight, vision, hearing, scoliosis, and kindergarten screenings.
  • Administers medication and treatment prescribed by physicians and oversees procedures for office staff to administer medications in the absence of the school nurse.
  • Conducts parent conferences and maintains liaison between physicians, parents and staff.
  • Makes recommendations to primary care physician on health needs of individual students.
  • Maintains up-to-date cumulative health records on all students requiring nursing intervention, including immunization records and exemptions for religious and medical reasons.
  • Reports to parents, school personnel, physicians, clinics and other agencies on student health matters.
  • Assumes authority, in the absence of a physician, for the care of a student who has suffered an injury or emergency illness.
  • Administers first aid in accordance with established first aid procedures and district policies.
  • Implements board policy on exclusion and re admission of students in connection withinfectious and contagious diseases.
  • Conducts training for students related to impairments, health and hygiene.
  • Assists school personnel in maintaining sanitary standards in schools.
  • Is available to do health-related lesson presentations in classrooms.
  • Observes professional ethics and confidentiality.
