About The Position

The School Nurse / Nurse Assistant is responsible for providing health services that support the physical, mental, emotional, and social health of students and staff, thereby promoting student learning and success. This position manages day-to-day health needs, maintains health records, administers medications, provides first aid and emergency care, and ensures compliance with state, federal, and district health service policies. The School Nurse / Nurse Assistant also leads the district’s Health and Wellness Committee and contributes to the Comprehensive School Improvement Plan (CSIP) by promoting student wellness, safety, and health education. Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Associate’s Degree, LPN, or RN license preferred.
  • Current Missouri nursing license (RN or LPN) preferred.
  • CPR and First Aid certification required.
  • Medication administration training required (or ability to obtain).
  • Knowledge of nursing principles, first aid, and school health best practices.
  • Ability to interpret and implement district health service policies.
  • Effective leadership skills to coordinate the Health and Wellness Committee.
  • Ability to respond quickly and effectively in emergency situations.
  • Strong organizational skills to maintain accurate records.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of medical and student records.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to work with students, staff, parents, and health professionals.
  • Is regularly required to stand, walk, sit, hear, speak, and see at close, moderate, and distance ranges.
  • Must occasionally lift and/or move up to 40 pounds when assisting students with mobility or health needs.
  • Must be able to respond promptly to medical emergencies.
  • Must meet deadlines with time constraints and manage multiple health-related tasks simultaneously.
  • Regular and consistent attendance is an essential function of this position.

Responsibilities

  • Provide direct health care to students and staff, including first aid and emergency care.
  • Administer prescribed medications and maintain accurate medication administration records.
  • Maintain health records for all students in accordance with district policy and state law.
  • Ensure all district health services policies are implemented consistently across school buildings.
  • Conduct required health screenings (vision, hearing, dental, etc.) and refer students as needed.
  • Monitor student immunization compliance and prepare reports required by DESE and the Missouri Department of Health.
  • Develop and implement individual health care plans (IHPs) for students with chronic health conditions.
  • Lead the district’s Health and Wellness Committee and oversee wellness initiatives in accordance with Board policy.
  • Collaborate with administrators, teachers, parents, and community health providers to support student wellness and attendance.
  • Support student achievement by addressing health-related barriers to learning.
  • Maintain health office supplies, equipment, and medical records in compliance with confidentiality standards.
  • Provide health education and wellness promotion for students, staff, and families.
  • Train staff on emergency health procedures, including the use of EpiPens and CPR.
  • Assist in implementing CSIP goals related to safe and healthy schools.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Principal or Superintendent.
