About The Position

The Eastchester School District is seeking candidates to fill the position of Substitute Nurse on a per diem basis providing health care services in the elementary and middle/high schools. Candidates must be committed to providing compassionate care for the social, emotional, and physical well being of the school community and have excellent communication, clerical, and organizational skills. Experience with Type 1 Diabetes and monitoring severe airborne, contact, and ingested food allergies and sports/athletics clearances is strongly preferred.

Requirements

  • Possession of a license and current registration issued by the New York State Education Department, to practice as a registered professional nurse
  • Knowledge of nursing principles and techniques as well as child development as it relates to health issues, risk factors, current health practices, infection control and personal hygiene
  • Ability to read and write English
  • Ability to understand and follow technical, oral and written instructions
  • Familiarity with computer applications such as spreadsheets (i.e. Excel, Google Sheets)/word processing (i.e. Word, Google Docs)/calendar/email, and database software
  • Good organization skills
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, teachers, parents and others
  • Good powers of observation; mental alertness; firmness; initiative, cheerfulness; patience; emotional stability; sympathetic attitude toward the sick, good moral character
  • Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position
  • NYSED Fingerprint Clearance

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with Type 1 Diabetes
  • Experience monitoring severe airborne, contact, and ingested food allergies
  • Experience with sports/athletics clearances

Responsibilities

  • Managing students with chronic conditions, such as asthma, diabetes, and allergies
  • Providing first aid and crisis intervention for acute illnesses and emergencies to students/staff
  • Arranging for the safe transportation of sick/injured students/staff in cases of emergency
  • Providing emotional support to students in need
  • Administering medication (standing orders and PRN's)
  • Screening students for vision, hearing and scoliosis or COVID-19
  • Interface with various agencies with respect to infectious disease protocols
  • Attending school trips with special needs children when needed
  • May perform catheterizations as required (all aspects including transfer and disposal)
  • Preparing Incident Reports
  • Initiating medical/dental claim forms
  • Use computer applications (spreadsheets, word processing, calendar, e-mail and database software) in performing work assignments
  • Order supplies and materials for individual building health office
  • May assist with or process athletic clearances and new student screening/registration/ COVID protocols
  • Other related assignments and responsibilities as requested by District Administration

Benefits

  • Salary: $300/diem
  • Per diem assignment, must commit to work at least one day per week during the school year
  • 12 month assignment (July - June) (Summer - coverage for Extended School Year Program and Summer School)
