Under the direction of an administrator, and general direction of a classroom teacher and specialist, positions allocated to this class are assigned to assist a teacher or specialists providing academic, social and community based instruction and assistance to individuals or small groups of students with a wide range of significant disabilities including autism and/or intellectual disabilities. Some positions may perform special duties relative to the individualized needs of the special education student, in addition to performing the regular duties of the Instructional Assistant in the classroom. Full responsibility for appropriate instruction, training, curriculum materials and evaluation procedures remain with the teacher. Incumbents assigned to the Behavior Support classification would be assigned to students who are demonstrating severe behaviors as a result of their emotional disturbance, ASD; or intellectual disabilities.
