About The Position

The Sub Education Support Professional position at Tacoma Public Schools is a temporary role that assists the classroom team in creating a safe and positive learning environment for students. The role promotes the physical, intellectual, social, and emotional growth of students in accordance with Early Childhood Education and Assistance and Head Start Program Standards. The position involves tutoring students individually or in small groups, monitoring student behavior, assisting teachers with classroom management, and providing general office assistance as needed.

Requirements

  • Must submit proof of required High School graduation or equivalent (GED).
  • Must have an Associate's degree or 72 credit hours of post-secondary education or passing ETS ParaPro Assessment state test with a score of 455 or higher.
  • Assistants working with the health impaired are required to obtain a first aid certificate and training in District approved restraint training and CPR.

Responsibilities

  • Tutors children individually or in small groups on a variety of subjects, as assigned; compiles, reviews, and records student assignments and progress.
  • Monitors student behavior in the classroom, lunchroom, during detention, and/or at recess; disciplines students according to procedures.
  • Assists teacher with classroom management; assists in preparing lessons; duplicates, organizes, distributes, and files learning materials.
  • Provides school office assistance, as assigned; answers telephone and takes messages, files, duplicates materials, sorts mail, types bulletins or other documents.
  • Administers district tests, records student scores, and reports results.
  • May pull students from classroom to tutor in assigned subjects for brief periods as assigned.
  • Attends building staff meetings; provides information regarding students; attends program meetings and workshops.
  • May travel between schools to work with students, as assigned.
  • Performs related duties as assigned, on a temporary basis, to assist the teachers or administrative staff.
