The Substitute Citizenship Teacher provides classes to adult students preparing for their naturalization exam. The teacher has both background in working with adult English language learners and teaching civics and U.S. history. They are also a passionate believer in culturally responsive teaching and the power of education to improve the lives of immigrants and their families. The Citizenship classes take place on weekday evenings from 7:00 pm to 8:30 pm. Some are in-person and others are via Zoom; the Substitute Citizenship Teacher must be able to teach both in-person and on Zoom.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree
• Experience working with low-income and/or immigrant populations
• Ability to provide effective and engaging instruction
• Ability to establish positive working relationships and communicate effectively with students, staff and volunteers
• Ability to function with minimal supervision and follow directions
• Excellent cultural and linguistic responsiveness skills, including the ability to work with people of varied cultural and socio-economic backgrounds
• Experience using Zoom to teach, including screen sharing, annotating and using breakout rooms
• Ability to access and use shared documents in Google Drive for attendance and lesson plans

Nice To Haves

• TESOL certification or master's degree in TESOL (preferred)
• Minimum one year experience teaching ESL or Civics/U.S. History or Citizenship (preferred)
• Knowledge of the naturalization process
• Ability to speak and understand Spanish at an intermediate level (preferred)

Responsibilities

• Deliver lessons according to lesson plans provided by regular instructor, preparing students to answer all questions asked during naturalization interviews.
• Present differentiated instruction that responds to the varied English language levels and varied educational backgrounds of students.
• Provide a nurturing, supportive, and positive learning environment with high expectations for students.
• Have respect for program staff, students and community.
• Communicate clearly and in a timely manner with program staff.
• Maintain accurate records of student attendance.
