BASIC FUNCTION: Assist a bus driver in maintaining order; attend to the needs and safety of handicapped students being transported to and from school. REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES: Individual positions may not perform all of the duties listed nor do these examples include all responsibilities of positions in this class. Assist the bus driver in pupil management. E Assist in loading and unloading special education students; strap wheelchairs in van for severely handicapped students; lift and secure handicapped students into bus seats; fasten harnesses and belts. E Move about the bus to attend to students’ needs and quiet disturbances. E Respond to medical emergencies and keep students clean when accidents occur. E Collect and turn over to the school secretary those personal items left on the bus by students. E Make certain that unauthorized persons do not ride bus. E Operate wheelchair lift on wheelchair bus. E Perform related duties as assigned. KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES: KNOWLEDGE OF: Health and safety regulations. First aid and CPR practices and procedures. Behavior management techniques. ABILITY TO: Understand and relate to the needs and behavior of exceptional children. Maintain order among children on a school bus. Learn procedures for handling wheelchairs on buses. Remain calm in stressful situations. Understand and follow oral and written instructions. Work cooperatively with others. Lift handicapped students into bus seats. Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others.
