About The Position

The Substation Technician I must be willing and able to complete and assist others in high and low voltage work involved in the construction and maintenance of electric transmission and distribution conductors, structures, substations, underground systems, and related equipment. The candidate should have knowledge of substation material and the use of substation construction tools and equipment. This position involves working as a member of a crew in the performance of tasks associated with the operation, maintenance, testing, troubleshooting, and repair of high voltage substation equipment and controls, including power circuit breakers, power transformers, control batteries and chargers, metal-clad switchgear, high voltage busses, fire protection systems, low voltage station service equipment, capacitor banks, and disconnect switches.

Requirements

  • 6 years experience or equivalent experience in related work
  • Working knowledge and performs tasks under or with little direction in the substation field of work
  • Extensive working knowledge of the substation field of work
  • Understand and carry out oral instructions
  • Read and carry out simple written instructions
  • Read and carry out complicated written instructions
  • Work at varying heights
  • Read and interpret detail prints and documents
  • Add, subtract, multiply and divide whole numbers, fractions, decimals and metrics to calculate surfaces, volumes, weights and measures
  • Operate complex equipment and power tools
  • Operate small equipment and power tools
  • Valid Drivers License required

Responsibilities

  • Work on energized conductors up to 500 volts
  • Install miscellaneous hardware, grounds, fittings during construction, buss supports, and conductors on dead circuits
  • Perform transmission and distribution switching
  • Rig, tie knots and splice rope
  • Assist qualified mechanic in simple routine inspection and maintenance
  • Assist in the installation of all types of conduit systems
  • Assist in the handling, moving and installation of all transmission, distribution and plant equipment, machinery, etc.
  • Assist in testing and filtering oil and minor repairs to transformers, oil circuit breakers, regulators, etc.
  • Prepare reports and records
  • Operate Company's vehicles and equipment
  • Know Company's safety rules and be willing and able to administer all appropriate methods of resuscitation and be willing & able to render practical first aid
  • Know the location of, and be willing and able to operate, all of the firefighting equipment
  • Know and assist in the erection of wood and steel structures, including foundations
  • Complete a pre-employment onboarding requirement evaluation
  • Know the proper equipment to use on electrical, oil and other fires
  • Follow rules of safe conduct and report to your supervisor immediately any unsafe condition or hazard or incident
  • Actively participate in all safety training programs
  • Use math skills dealing with whole numbers, fractions, and decimals to add, subtract, multiply and divide
  • Use standard and/or metric rule to measure
  • Interpret and apply information from work orders, job orders, specs, ISO's, blueprints, or other drawings & recognize basic blueprint terms & symbols
  • Efficiently utilize materials/resources in a cost-effective manner
  • Read and follow schematic diagrams and control schemes or blueprints in the operation of electrical and electronic devices and equipment
  • Plan and schedule work sequences
  • Distinguish color coded wires, signs, breakers, etc.
  • Identify, explain, and perform crane hand signals if applicable
  • Use safe rigging practices
  • Use oxygen/acetylene flame cutting equipment
  • Use appropriate hand & power tools for the job in a safe manner
  • Recognize various materials used in the craft and have the working knowledge of appropriate material handling techniques
  • Accurately perform and repair circuit breakers, transformers, tap changers, protective relays
  • Correctly install, inspect, and maintain substation equipment
  • Test and troubleshoot substation equipment using appropriate techniques
  • Safely utilize demolition procedures
  • Select and safely use appropriate equipment which may include manlifts, forklifts, and company trucks
  • Work in small, cramped areas, in a variety of weather conditions, and at heights greater than 20 feet
  • Display skills and techniques necessary to distinguish exposed live parts from other parts of electric equipment
  • Determine the nominal voltage of exposed live parts
  • Determine minimum approach distances in relation to the voltage(s) to which the qualified employee will be exposed to & maintain those distances
  • Employ the proper use of special precautionary techniques, personal protective equipment, insulating and shielding materials, and insulated tools for working on or near exposed energized parts of electric equipment
  • Recognize electrical hazards to which the employees may be exposed & control or avoid such hazards
  • Demonstrate safe fall protection and prevention practices
  • Understand the Stop Work Authority procedure
