About The Position

Substation Technician -B is a non-exempt position focused on the construction, maintenance, and repair of substation equipment and systems. This role requires 4-6 years of continuous working knowledge of 525 kv and below substation equipment, apparatus, and wiring. The technician will work in confined spaces and elevated areas, utilizing various construction equipment specific to the trade. They may work independently or with a team, often requiring long hours during emergencies and at various locations, including potential travel to other states based on customer demands. The position also involves coaching subordinates. Requirements

  • Able to perform rigorous physical labor.
  • Must be capable of climbing and working at heights up to 125 feet above ground.
  • Must possess a Commercial Drivers’ License.
  • Must supply own personal hand tools required by the company for this work.
  • Must supply own safety toed work boots.
  • Must be capable of lifting in excess of 50 lbs.
  • Must be capable of working in confined spaces/areas.
  • Must be able to work independently or with others.
  • Operational experience of Bucket, derrick and boom trucks.
  • Operational experience of Backhoes, excavators and skid steer loaders.
  • Operational experience of Articulating Man-lifts.
  • Operational experience of Pressure Diggers.
  • Operational experience of Trenchers.
  • Operational experience of Track Crawler Loader/Backhoe.
  • Operational experience of Rough Terrain Telescopic Forklifts.
  • Willing to work over-time or long hours during emergency conditions and/or when requested.
  • 90% Travel Required.
  • Capable of following Company safety rules and policies.
  • Must have knowledge of construction standard practices, techniques, quality requirements, applicable codes and standards.
  • Must be capable of working in close proximity of energized substation equipment.
  • Must be capable of interpreting substation structural drawings (i.e. elevations, plan views, section views, grounding details, and foundation plans) and communicate with customers and subordinates.
  • Capable of accurately appraising technical situations.
  • Must be able to coach subordinates on the crew.
  • Must be able to develop and interpret a material list.
  • Must be able to trace out phasing in a substation and verify to the three line diagrams.
  • Retained knowledge in all aspects of substation systems.
  • Ability to establish grade, elevations, and layout of foundations and cable trough in new and existing stations.
  • Grade and finish concrete slabs and foundations.
  • Capable of performing routine carpentry work on building wood concrete forms to meet size and shape of concrete to be placed.
  • Willing to work outside of the normal work schedule including weekends, holidays, and overtime as required for the position.
  • 4-6 year continuous working knowledge of 525 kv and below substation equipment, apparatus, and wiring.

Responsibilities

  • Work safely while performing new construction, maintenance or repair, testing, adjusting and troubleshooting work of substation equipment/systems.
  • Perform work involving Concrete Foundations, ground grids, and steel erection.
  • Perform work involving Buswork (High and Low Voltage).
  • Perform work involving Airbreak / Hookstick Switches.
  • Perform work involving Control Cable.
  • Perform work involving Terminations (High / Low Voltage).
  • Perform work involving Control Buildings.
  • Perform work involving Conduit and duck banks.
  • Perform work involving Capacitor bank installations 23kv- 230 kv.
  • Perform work involving Transformers, regulators and circuit breakers.
  • Perform work involving Circuit Switchers, motor-operated and manual switches.
  • Be responsible for maintaining Company vehicles, test equipment and tools in good working conditions.
  • Frequently work with energized high voltage systems requiring skill and care to protect the lives of themselves and others.
