About The Position

Substation Technician -B is a non-exempt position in the construction, maintenance and repair of substation equipment / systems. Substation Technician- B has a 4-6 year continuous working knowledge of 525 kv and below substation equipment, apparatus, and wiring. This position requires work in confined spaces and in elevated work areas, and works with various pieces of construction equipment specific to the trade. A Substation Technician- B may work independently or with others, occasionally work long hours during emergency conditions. This position should be able to coach subordinates on the crew. This position works at various locations. The position may also be required to travel to another state depending on customer demands. NOTE: TRAVEL TO FLORIDA AND OTHER STATES/LOCATIONS IS REQUIRED.

Requirements

  • Able to perform rigorous physical labor.
  • Capable of climbing and working at heights up to 125 feet above ground.
  • Possess a Commercial Drivers’ License.
  • Supply own personal hand tools required by the company for this work.
  • Supply own safety toed work boots.
  • Capable of lifting in excess of 50 lbs.
  • Capable of working in confined spaces/areas.
  • Able to work independently or with others.
  • Operational experience of various types of heavy equipment.
  • Willing to work over-time or long hours during emergency conditions.
  • Capable of following company safety rules and policies.
  • Knowledge of construction standard practices, techniques, quality requirements, applicable codes and standards.
  • Capable of working in close proximity of energized substation equipment.
  • Capable of interpreting substation structural drawings.
  • Able to accurately appraise technical situations.

Responsibilities

  • Work safely while performing new construction, maintenance or repair, testing, adjusting and troubleshooting work of substation equipment/systems.
  • Perform work involving concrete foundations, ground grids, and steel erection.
  • Handle buswork (High and Low Voltage).
  • Work with airbreak / hookstick switches.
  • Manage control cable terminations (High / Low Voltage).
  • Oversee control buildings and conduit and duck banks.
  • Install capacitor banks (23kv-230kv).
  • Work with transformers, regulators, and circuit breakers.
  • Handle circuit switchers, motor-operated and manual switches.
  • Maintain company vehicles, test equipment, and tools in good working conditions.
  • Work with energized high voltage systems requiring skill and care.
  • Coach subordinates on the crew.
  • Develop and interpret a material list.
  • Trace out phasing in a substation and verify to the three line diagrams.
  • Establish grade, elevations, and layout of foundations and cable trough in new and existing stations.
  • Grade and finish concrete slabs and foundations.
  • Perform routine carpentry work on building wood concrete forms.
