About The Position

Substation Technician- A is a non-exempt position in the construction, maintenance and repair of substation equipment / systems. Substation Technician- A has a 6-8 year continuous working knowledge of 525 kv and below substation equipment, apparatus, and wiring. This position requires work in confined spaces and in elevated work areas, and works with various pieces of construction equipment specific to the trade. A Substation Technician A may work independently or with others, occasionally work long hours during emergency conditions. This position should be able to lead/coach subordinates on the crew. This position works at various locations. The position may also be required to travel to another state depending on customer demands.

Requirements

  • Able to perform rigorous physical labor.
  • Capable of climbing and working at heights up to 125 feet above ground.
  • Possess a Commercial Drivers’ License.
  • Supply own personal hand tools required by the company for this work.
  • Supply own safety toed work boots.
  • Capable of lifting in excess of 50 lbs.
  • Capable of working in confined spaces/areas.
  • Operational experience of various types of heavy equipment.
  • Willing to work over-time or long hours during emergency conditions and/or when requested.
  • Capable of following Company safety rules and policies.
  • Extensive knowledge of construction standard practices, techniques, quality requirements, applicable codes and standards.
  • Proficient knowledge in all aspects of substation systems.

Nice To Haves

  • Ability to accurately appraise technical situations and recommend resolutions to problems.
  • Capable of running the job during the absence of the Foreman.
  • Willing to work outside of the normal work schedule including weekends, holidays, and overtime as required for the position.

Responsibilities

  • Works safely while performing new construction, maintenance or repair, testing, adjusting and troubleshooting work of substation equipment/systems.
  • Maintains Company vehicles, test equipment and tools in good working conditions.
  • Works with energized high voltage systems requiring skill and care to protect the lives of themselves and others.
  • Interprets substation structural drawings and communicates with customers and subordinates.
  • Leads/coaches subordinates on the crew.
  • Develops and interprets a material list.
  • Traces out phasing in a substation and verifies to the three line diagrams.
  • Establishes grade, elevations, and layout of foundations and cable trough in new and existing stations.
