Responsible for the design of deliverables associated with substation design projects supporting one of our largest electric utility clients. The substation 'physical' design activities include yard layouts, plans, sections and details, grounding, lightning protection, control building arrangements, interior and exterior raceways, auxiliary AC/DC power systems, and associated bills of material. The substation 'protection and control' design activities include one-line & three-line diagrams, AC & DC elementary & logic diagrams, front & rear panel elevations and wiring, supervisory & control drawings, electrical vendor equipment wiring diagrams, complete cable schedule and bill of materials. The position will be reporting directly to the Substation Engineering Manager. This position is remote, but must be located in the Houston, Texas area.

  • Attends project site visits to assist in the development of scope of work and help define project objectives.
  • Prepares engineering cost estimate and man-hour estimates and schedules.
  • Develops top level documents for Electrical Physical and Protection & Control packages.
  • Provides guidance to junior engineers and/or designers in the development of detailed design documents.
  • Performs calculations for studies and reports including, but not limited to, grounding & lightning protection, and AC/DC load studies.
  • Prepares equipment specifications for procurement of major equipment.
  • Performs quality control reviews of design calculations, and drawings.
  • Provides short term field support during construction.
  • Coordinate design activities with other disciplines (Civil/structural, telecom, transmission, etc.)
  • Serves as technical advisor for the team.
  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from an ABET approved college or university.
  • 8+ years of experience working in substation design or similar with utility or consulting engineering firm.
  • Proficient using Microsoft Office suite (e.g., Excel, Word, and Outlook).
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving skills, and attention to detail.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Professional Engineer’s License in Electrical Engineering preferred but not required.
  • Experience leading a team of engineers and designers designing substation projects.
