About The Position

The Substation Equipment Installer Manager is responsible for providing leadership, guidance, and direction to the Substation Construction work group with statewide responsibilities for all major equipment installation and specialty equipment transportation required on substation projects that are part of the Georgia Power Transmission capital investment portfolio. This position will be responsible for ensuring that Installer crews and Switch test technicians have the training, equipment, and resources to successfully execute their projects. This position is also responsible for transformer and breaker capital commissioning overflow support for Transmission Maintenance Centers across the state. This role will provide guidance to a leadership team of a crew supervisor and four construction field managers who oversee 3 foreman with 42 covered employees, roughly 40 contract resources, 5 test technicians, 3 inspectors and an analyst working statewide. In addition, they will also be responsible for a crew supervisor with three foremen who oversee 39 covered employees. It is anticipated that this position will oversee roughly $7M in annual contractor spend for the foreseeable future. The Manager will conduct ongoing performance management and ensure robust plans for leadership development in support of an active learning environment. This position interfaces with Training and Safety to support the initial and ongoing training within Substation Construction. The manager will coordinate with peer Substation Construction managers, Specialty Mover and Rail Car Contractors, Project Management, Substation Design, Transmission Maintenance Centers, Transmission Support, Supply Chain Management, and other internal and external partners to ensure projects are completed on schedule and in a quality manner. The manager is responsible to lead the team in a Safety Excellence environment with a focus on learning and ensuring critical and operational risk plans are implemented. Major focus areas include safety, inclusion, performance management, employee development, training, quality assurance, and efficiency improvement. NOTE: This position has statewide responsibilities, and frequent travel within the state of Georgia is required – up to 25% of the time.

Requirements

  • Education: Bachelor's degree preferred.
  • Experience within Transmission is required; TMC, Operations, Sub Design, and/or Construction experience is beneficial.
  • Experience leading covered employees is preferred.
  • Subject matter expertise in substation equipment is preferred.
  • Familiarity with project management principles and techniques including the Gated Process is a plus.
  • Contract administration knowledge and experience is a plus.
  • Performance management experience required.
  • Demonstrated experience leading inclusive teams and developing others.
  • Demonstrated focus on Safety Excellence and Human Performance.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills with internal and external audiences.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of IBEW Local 84 Transmission MOA.
  • Knowledge of contract administration beneficial.
  • Knowledge of the Georgia Integrated Transmission System (ITS) beneficial.
  • Knowledge of GPC Safety and Health policies, safe work practices & procedures, and System Operating Procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership for the Equipment Installer project and contractor oversight teams, switch test technicians and GPC crews while supporting initiatives throughout Transmission Construction.
  • Create and implement strategy to address current and future needs of Substation Equipment Installers.
  • Model safety leadership and support employee-led safety culture and human performance initiatives.
  • Foster an inclusive culture where employees feel valued and create an environment of trust, development, and continuous improvement.
  • Deliver effective performance management and actively support leadership development and training for direct reports.
  • Create and implement equitable, proactive plans to support team members in their learning, growth and development training for current and future roles.
  • Understand and adhere to the Transmission Construction labor agreements.
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with internal and external partners – peer Substation Construction managers, Specialty Mover and Rail Car Contractors, Project Management, Substation Design, Transmission Maintenance Centers, Transmission Support, Supply Chain Management.
  • Oversee the hiring and onboarding process for covered employees.
  • Ensure collaborative relationships with our contractors are maintained while confirming their ability to perform work to high quality standards and in a safe and timely manner.
  • Oversee the onboarding process for new contractors.
  • Support the Gated Process for effective and timely completion of Construction projects such as engaging in weekly/monthly scheduling meetings.
  • Lead workforce planning and contractor management efforts.
