About The Position

Substation Engineering is an integral part of the Substation Engineering Services Department at Pacific Gas & Electric Company, supporting the company's $1 billion capital investment in substation and transmission line projects. The department is responsible for preparing detailed construction drawings for substations and provides engineering expertise to upgrade, expand, and replace infrastructure, including distribution and transmission substations, technical assistance on feasibility studies, construction support, and input in project evaluation and cross-checking. As a summer intern, you will serve as a vital link between the company and the widespread interconnection of generation, increased capacity demand (residential, commercial, and industrial), and system reliability improvements in California. Your role will involve working alongside experienced engineers to ensure excellent service for these projects. The department seeks motivated, self-driven individuals who enjoy hands-on engineering, possess excellent communication skills, high energy, and thrive in a team environment, offering a challenging and rewarding career. The successful intern will have the opportunity to lead and/or support activities working with a team of experienced engineers and gain knowledge of the larger Substation Engineering organization.

Requirements

  • Qualified candidates are pursuing a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering at an accredited University
  • Students must be continuing their education full time towards degree during and/or after the internship
  • Must have reliable transportation to and from work location

Nice To Haves

  • Coursework in power systems
  • EIT or FE certification
  • 3.0 GPA or greater in both cumulative GPA and major GPA
  • Engineering experience in utilities, municipalities, construction, or engineering consultation
  • Ability to work in a team environment and support fellow team members
  • Strong problem solving and analytical skills
  • Strong communication skills, both oral and written
  • Takes initiative and can work independently with minimal direction

Responsibilities

  • Actively promote safe practices and conduct in accordance with the Corporate Safety policy.

  • Ensure delivery of high-quality design products on budget and on time.
  • Support other team members in Transmission and Distribution Substation designs using Substation software for indoor equipment (SCADA, relays, meters, batteries, annunciators, metal clad switchgear, etc.) and outdoor equipment (open air bus structures, support structures, circuit breakers, transformers, disconnect switches, etc.).
  • Work with and learn from other departments involved in Substations such as Maintenance, Construction, Asset Strategy, Distribution Planning, Standards, Protection, Automation, etc.
  • Support other team members in creating/updating drawings like single line diagrams, AC & DC schematics, indoor& outdoor arrangements, control room layouts, station service, circuit & conduit schedules.
