Westwood Professional Services, Inc. is seeking a mid-level Protection and Control Engineer to join our Renewables Substation team. The primary function of this role is to lead the Substation P&C Engineering and Design efforts for large scale, transmission-interconnected renewable energy projects. The P&C Engineer will work with (and provide direction to) other engineers, designers, and drafters to develop project deliverables that satisfy all stakeholder requirements and comply with applicable codes & standards. As part of the broader multi-discipline Substation Team, the P&C Engineer will work with the Substation Project Engineer and other discipline leads to ensure design documents are coordinated and consistent between the Physical, Civil/Structural, Relay Settings, and SCADA teams.

  • Performs all aspects of P&C design for high voltage (4kV – 230kV) and EHV (above 230kV) substation projects.
  • Development of all project drawings including one-lines, three-lines, AC/DC schematics, relay panel elevation and BOM, control enclosure layout and BOM, equipment and relay panel wiring diagrams, and communication schematics.
  • Development of studies/calculations such as station service AC load calculations, transformer sizing, station battery/charger DC load calculations, CT saturation studies, and voltage drop/cable sizing.
  • Assist with development of major equipment specifications.
  • Review equipment vendor submittals for conformance with specs and project requirements.
  • Review P&C deliverables completed by others.
  • Cross discipline checks with other substation/service leads.
  • Attend internal and external project meetings as needed.
  • Assist Project Engineer with procurement and construction support tasks.
  • Requires a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from a recognized accredited program.
  • EIT Certification.
  • 4+ years work experience in high voltage substation P&C design.
  • Strong knowledge of substation zones of protection and typical protection and control schemes for transmission lines, HV/MV buses, power transformers, capacitor banks, etc.
  • Familiarity with substation major equipment and the specifications, schematics, and wiring thereof including HV and MV circuit breakers, power transformers, instrument transformers, disconnect switches, LV AC systems, LV DC systems, capacitor banks, relay panels, and control enclosures.
  • Strong written and verbal communications skills.
  • Familiarity with industry standards and codes such as ANSI, IEEE, NEC, NESC, NERC, etc.
  • General knowledge of the industry and technology trends specific to substations.
  • Professional engineering license or ability to obtain one within 2 years of hire.
  • Previous experience in a consultancy environment.
  • Previous experience with large scale renewable energy projects.
  • General knowledge of relay settings/protection device coordination.
  • General knowledge of SCADA and communications systems.
  • General knowledge of substation construction practices.
  • Competitive salary range of USD $90,000.00 to $120,000.00 per year.
  • Full-time in-office position with preferred locations in Austin, TX, Madison, WI, Raleigh, NC, and Charlotte, NC.
