About The Position

This is an open position with FirstEnergy Pennsylvania Electric Company, a subsidiary of FirstEnergy Corp [PN]. Job Summary Performs duties in connection with the installation, removal, operation, inspection, testing, maintenance, and repair of energized and de-energized overhead and underground electric transmission and distribution substation equipment. Performs other work as assigned.

Requirements

  • Must meet the Company’s requirements as to the General Qualifications, and in addition:
  • Ability to meet job knowledge and skill requirements will be determined by company interviews and tests. Must have successfully completed required examination. Must be able to perform safely and satisfactorily the work assignments of lower classifications and qualify for 27 of the 38 duties of this classification. For employees outside of the Substation Unit, successful bidder must satisfy testing requirements of CAST and ESST.
  • Must have high school diploma or GED.
  • Must have a valid CDL Class A.
  • Working knowledge of company rules, regulations, methods, and routines as they apply to employees and substation work. Possess well-developed initiative, resourcefulness, and judgment.
  • Ability to prepare legible and accurate records and reports.
  • Ability to climb and work off wood and steel and wood structures and perform heavy physical work outdoors in all seasons.
  • Meet company standards in regard to physical fitness, personal conduct and appearance, attendance, work performance, safety practices, and supervision required.
  • Must promote and interact harmoniously, under regular and emergency situations, with fellow employees, other Company employees, and customers.
  • Must have a telephone and respond regularly of planned overtime and call-outs, as required.
  • Must satisfactorily progress in and complete required training courses as required by the Company.
  • Must have a knowledge of and comply with the local, state and federal motor vehicle laws and must meet the Company's driving requirements.
  • Must meet all the minimum qualifications of a Substation Electrician C classification as shown on applicable job description and employee qualification guide.

Responsibilities

  • Under direct supervision, performs the assigned work in overhauling, calibration, and testing of new and in-service equipment.
  • Becoming proficient in the skills of wiring checkout; operational substation switching; testing, calibration, installation of overcurrent and ground relays; the application of programmable logic controllers; basic SCADA systems; the setup, commissioning and teardown of mobile substations; all breakers, switchers, MOABs and airbreak switches, instrument transformers, load tap changers; testing, calibration, and installation of regulators; network transformers, interrupters, and protectors; and comprehensive troubleshooting and functional testing of substation equipment and systems.
  • Interpreting and working from basic construction drawings, wiring drawings, and schematics, manufacturers’ instruction manuals and equipment specifications.
  • Demonstrating the preparation of written reports and records in connection with work performed, problems encountered, solutions achieved and data all recorded in a neat, accurate, and concise manner. Also the ability to make field sketches of installed or in-service equipment, wiring, and connections.
  • Cleaning up liquid spills, smoke, fire, and water-damaged material, and other equipment damage according to the FirstEnergy Accident Prevention Handbook, including procedures mandated by city, state, federal, and Company regulations.
  • Demonstrating the ability to provide timely, courteous and helpful assistance, when required, in customer substations in switching, repairing, and replacing damaged or faulty equipment.
  • Demonstrating the ability to replace defective devices, components, or connectors and repairing, assembling, erecting, and installing equipment, hardware, and accessories in a safe, efficient, and proper manner, demonstrating proper use of equipment and tools, as assigned.
  • Receiving and incorporating instruction in equipment operation and the proper performance of work from higher classification employees, supervisors or other management, assisting in organizing and planning the assigned work, as directed; participating in daily job briefing sessions with the crew to coordinate and ensure the safe completion of the work.
  • Keeping work area in good order and cleaning up after completion of the work.
  • Working closely with and interacting with other elements of the Region and Corporation in overlapping work areas in a manner that is useful, efficient, and productive.
  • Assisting in assignments in connection with the new or replacement installation, adjustment, inspection, repair, and removal of designated substation systems, underground cable/termination and equipment, including switching instructions from Dispatchers.
  • Assisting in assignments, through all voltage levels, in connection with energized circuits and electrically-isolated transmission circuits in substations, which are adjacent or in close proximity to energized transmission and distribution circuits.
  • Assisting in the assigned work in inspection, testing, calibrating, maintaining, installing, removing of substation supervisory batteries, chargers, and associated equipment and emergency generators.
  • Maintaining, repairing, and installing of all electrical equipment including, but not limited to, circuit breakers, voltage regulators, transformers, load tap changers, rotating equipment, capacitor banks, batteries, switches, and various relay and control equipment; including underground vault systems and equipment, as assigned, and communications equipment as requested by other areas.
  • Maintaining, repairing, and installing of all substation structures including, but not limited to, steel structures, bus, insulators, conduit, panel boxes, fence, stone, and yard work activities to include climbing structural steel and major equipment.
  • Maintaining, repairing, and installing of buildings, vaults, and manholes.
  • Performing machining, welding, brazing, and cutting operations.
  • Under close supervision, performing switching and grounding on high voltage equipment; under directive supervision, perform less complex switching.
  • Inspecting manholes and vaults.
  • Assist in the operating of field test equipment including ductor, hi-pot tester, breaker travel analyzer, TTR, megger, TCG monitor, confined space monitor, and phasing sticks.
  • Excavation of manholes and vaults, shoring and forming walls, pouring and finishing concrete structures and foundations, laying up brick and block and other masonry tasks.
  • Operating booms, cranes, bucket trucks, and other aerial lift equipment.
  • Checking voltage and specific gravity of control storage batteries; making minor repairs and performing maintenance work on batteries such as cleaning and greasing terminals and replacing connectors.
  • Performing shop maintenance, repair, and test activities on distribution transformers, voltage regulators, oil switches, reclosers, and similar equipment.
  • Performing the duties of a Substation Electrician A and other duties as assigned of an equivalent skill level.
