About The Position

The Substation Asset Strategy Internship position is located within the Substation Asset Management (SAM) team. SAM oversees the equipment in our electric substations, examining risks and mitigations to keep our equipment in service. The Substation Asset Strategy Internship position will be at the forefront of a new methodology for calculating the probability and consequence of failure for our substation equipment. The successful candidate is expected to support senior engineering staff on key initiatives including but not limited to: Selecting one of our asset types for investigation, learning about how that equipment functions on the electric grid and what potential risks the equipment creates Work with our field partners to identify field inventory of the equipment and ensure critical data fields are populated Utilizing our template and methodology to create calculations for the probably and consequence of failure PG&E is providing the hourly rate range that the company in good faith believes it might pay for this position at the time of the job posting. This compensation range is specific to the locality of the job.  The actual hourly rate paid to an individual will be based on multiple factors, including, but not limited to, specific skills, education, licenses or certifications, experience, market value, geographic location, and internal equity. The hourly rate for this position ranges from $24.52 to $35.37. The successful intern will have the opportunity to learn about these activities as described above working with a team of experienced engineers and specialists.  Additionally, the intern will gain knowledge of the larger Electric Engineering organization through the work they will be performing.

Requirements

  • Qualified candidates are pursuing a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering or Civil Engineering at an accredited University
  • Students must be continuing their education towards their degree during and/or after the internship

Nice To Haves

  • EIT or FE certification
  • Engineering experience in utilities, municipalities, construction, or engineering consultation
  • Ability to work in a team environment and support fellow team members
  • Strong problem solving and analytical skills
  • Strong communication skills, both oral and written

Responsibilities

  • Identifying the population of equipment in service
  • Determining failure modes for equipment
  • Calculating the probability of failure for the equipment type
  • Calculating the consequence of failure
  • Updating documentation
  • Determining best practices for maintenance and repair
  • Travel may be required; frequency depends on the assignment and is typically less than 10%.
