About The Position

The position involves promoting self-determination, recovery, self-advocacy, and self-direction among individuals with substance use disorders. The role requires assisting individuals in identifying their strengths, wellness goals, setting objectives, and identifying barriers. The candidate will work collaboratively with AHS team members and outside entities, providing individual and group peer support. Responsibilities include helping consumers with community advocacy, conducting outreach to engage homeless adults with substance use disorders, and completing required documentation in a timely manner. The role also involves transporting clients when necessary, connecting them to support groups, and serving as a role model in recovery. The candidate will maintain clinical records, manage a caseload effectively, and participate in performance improvement activities.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Peer Specialist Certification through State of Alabama Department of Mental Health.
  • Must be 23 years of age.
  • Maintain a valid Alabama driver license and an acceptable driving record.
  • Maintain proof of current liability insurance.
  • Proficient in basic computer word-processing.
  • Two consecutive years in Substance Abuse Recovery and comfortable self-identifying as being in recovery.
  • Knowledge of the nature of addiction as a primary illness.
  • Knowledge of cultural and gender specific issues relative to addiction.
  • Knowledge of Substance Abuse treatment principles.
  • Knowledge of psychiatric rehabilitation principles.
  • Knowledge of twelve-step support groups such as AA, NA, CA, and other self-help groups.
  • Understanding of the dynamics of co-dependency and typical behaviors of consumers.
  • Knowledge of the behavioral, psychological, physical health, and social effects of psychoactive drugs.
  • Knowledge of helping strategies for reducing the negative effects of substance abuse.
  • Knowledge of medical and pharmaceutical resources in the treatment of addictive disease.
  • Knowledge of the risk for illnesses among IV drug users such as HIV/AIDS and T.B.
  • Knowledge of the criminal justice system including court hearings and probation officers.
  • Knowledge of behavioral management and crisis intervention.

Responsibilities

  • Offers hope and encouragement by serving as a role model in recovery.
  • Makes multiple contacts to consumers per week while maintaining healthy professional boundaries.
  • Documents in a timely fashion per AHS policy.
  • Documents measurable and specific goals in the individualized service plan.
  • Documents consumer problems and services provided after every contact.
  • Documents case disposition, case closings, follow-up, and referrals.
  • Seeks supervision and consultation as needed.
  • Maintains confidential files for each supported employment client.
  • Provides timely documentation that meets requirements of various funding sources.
  • Effectively manages caseload based on consumer needs.
  • Meets AltaPointe productivity standards.
  • Treats consumers with care, dignity, and compassion.
  • Participates in Performance Improvement activities and AltaPointe committees.
  • Completes assigned tasks in a timely manner.
  • Follows AltaPointe policies and procedures.
  • Attends required in-service training and other workshops.
