About The Position

Employees work in state-operated facilities such as Alcohol and Drug Abuse Black Mountain Treatment Center, state psychiatric hospitals, developmental centers, or correctional institutions. They support individuals with substance use disorders by helping them build cognitive, behavioral, social, and vocational skills through counseling, behavioral interventions, and case management. Work includes screening referred clients for substance use and mental health concerns using standardized assessment tools, completing intakes and orientations, and gathering comprehensive social, educational, cultural, psychological, physical, career, and family histories. Employees provide behavioral intervention therapy, including services targeting criminal thinking and behaviors for clients involved in the criminal justice system. They may also coordinate care with mental health providers while continuing to deliver substance use counseling and collaborate with other healthcare professionals on complex cases to ensure continuity of care. This Substance Abuse Counselor position is located at the Black Mountain Treatment Center in Swannanoa, NC. This is a 64-bed residential facility responsible for the delivery of chemical dependency treatment services to probationers sent by the courts and parolees released from the State Prison System and transitioning back into the community. Rehabilitation and Reentry Treatment staff plans, administers, and coordinates chemical dependency screening and substance use disorder treatment services within the Department of Adult Correction. The selected candidate for this position will function as part of the clinical team at a 64-bed residential treatment program and will provide administrative/clinical supervision and training to assigned staff. This position will provide case consultation and educational and Substance Abuse Counselor in serious and complicated cases requiring a wide range of advanced Substance Abuse Counselor skills with a specific focus on co-occurring diagnosis in the offender population. Other duties associated with this position include counseling; consultation with psychiatrist, substance abuse program manager, facility management, medical team; and individual treatment planning and delivery. The selected candidate may perform other appropriate clinical duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Credentialed as a Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor (CADC), OR as a Licensed Clinical Addictions Specialist – Associate (LCAS-A), OR In an equivalent credential from a governing authority recognized by the NC Addictions Specialist Professional Practice Board to practice under the provisions of the North Carolina Substance Abuse Professional Practice Act.
  • Applicants possessing one of these credentials from a governing authority recognized by the North Carolina Substance Abuse Professional Practice Board will also be considered: Certified Clinical Supervisor (CCS), Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT), Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW)

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of the theories or practices of chemical dependency counseling
  • Experience in the assessment, treatment, and/or referral of substance abusing offenders or of clients involved in the criminal justice system
  • Knowledge of an electronic system of treatment records and of a spreadsheet application
