About The Position

The Substance Abuse Counselor will assess patients with substance abuse concerns using NIDA compliant tools, identify risk factors of substance use, withdrawal, intoxication, overdose, and relapse, and utilize relapse prevention efforts such as psychoeducation, coping skills development, and community referrals. They will develop individualized strategies to help patients manage triggers and trauma history, provide substance use screening and counseling to patients referred by facility staff, medical staff, or as identified by the courts, and refer patients who may benefit from behavioral health intervention to onsite qualified mental health professionals. Collaboration with jail and medical staff on the management and treatment of patients with identified risk of withdrawal, as well as those eligible for medication assisted treatment (MAT) services, is essential. The role also involves coordinating with county behavioral health services for continuity of care, prevention efforts, and discharge planning via sharing of pertinent patient information. Counselors are responsible for completing documentation of assessment and treatment, maintaining records for referral tracking and continuous quality improvement (CQI), and facilitating substance use groups as requested. They must maintain the integrity and confidentiality of organizational and patient information, demonstrate commitment and dedication to providing substance abuse support, and provide training designed to solve problems and make lives easier. Partnering with behavioral health, medical, and management teams to facilitate teamwork and collaboratively accomplish organizational goals is expected. The position requires performing high-quality work that meets organizational standards and demonstrates a higher standard of patient care, maintaining accurate and up-to-date medical records and reports, and serving as the liaison between service providers, including both internal and external personnel. All other duties as assigned must also be performed.

Requirements

  • High School diploma required.
  • 2+ years’ experience counseling those with substance abuse challenges OR an equivalent combination of education and experience required.
  • Knowledge and training in substance abuse and related health issues and recovery protocols (including 12 step programs) required.
  • CPR certification must be obtained prior to hire and maintained while in this role.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and be able to operate a motor vehicle.

Nice To Haves

  • Associate or bachelor’s degree in related field preferred.
  • Knowledge of the local treatment community and referrals preferred.
  • Experience in individual and group counseling preferred.
  • Experience with medication assisted treatment (MAT) preferred.
