About The Position

This position is an individual contributor role focused on operating a flux-core sub-arc welder to create continuous joint prep welds on steel multi-sided shafts. The role requires both independent and team-based work, ensuring high-quality welding standards and adherence to safety protocols.

Requirements

  • 0-1 year of welding experience.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Ability to read blueprints and use a tape measure.
  • Ability to pass AWS welder operator qualification tests for SAW and GMAW.
  • Ability to operate overhead cranes and perform general maintenance on equipment.
  • Ability to make mathematical calculations for product preparation and machinery setup.
  • Ability to interpret Weld Procedures and Work Instructions.
  • Must be able to safely lift up to 50 pounds, with frequent lifts up to 20 pounds.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous experience with sub-arc welding.
  • Prior experience in a manufacturing setting.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to follow work instructions.
  • Positive communication skills with coworkers and supervisors.

Responsibilities

  • Operate a flux-core sub-arc welder to place continuous joint prep welds around the circumference of steel shafts.
  • Load and unload pole sections onto the base self-station using an overhead crane.
  • Preheat baseplate as required before welding.
  • Apply a backing weld using the GMAW process.
  • Prep groove using carbon arc gouging and/or grinding techniques.
  • Observe and adjust the welding process, including amperage and wire speed, to meet quality specifications.
  • Self-inspect welds for quality and rework as necessary.
  • Perform excavation of welds using carbon arc gouging and repair using GMAW for failed welds.
  • Participate in department safety and LEAN activities, demonstrating excellent safety practices.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of Valmont's quality procedures, standards, and practices.
