Age Specific Responsibility Must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served in assigned department. Must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient’s status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient’s requirements relative to age-specific needs and to provide the care needed as described in the department’s policies and procedures. Summary The COTA Team primarily fulfills Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant (COTA) responsibilities while also serve as a resource for the team and providing administrative support to the Rehab Therapy Manager. Duties include scheduling, answering phone calls, and assisting with departmental operations. Under the supervision of a licensed occupational therapist, the team delivers occupational therapy services as assigned. Members maintain and enhance treatment skills through continuing education, evidence-based practice, and program development. All responsibilities are performed in alignment with the program’s strategic objectives and organizational goals.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited Occupational Therapy Assistant program.
  • Certification by the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy.
  • Licensure with the State of Michigan.
  • The physical ability to lift, position, and transport patients with physical impairments.
  • Possesses and maintains BLS certification to meet department/program protocol.

Responsibilities

  • Team Lead Responsibilities Maintains a basic understanding of all COTA duties and responsibilities.
  • Encourages open communication and teamwork within the department and with other work areas.
  • Supports positive working relationships with team members, other departments, and external partners as needed.
  • Assists in addressing customer service concerns and follow up as directed by leadership.
  • Helps identify and resolve routine problems; share information and work with others to find solutions.
  • Provides clerical support and assist with phone calls to help reduce patient concerns when needed.
  • Assists with creating staff and patient schedules as directed.
  • Shares updates on new processes, policies, or procedures from leadership; help staff understand changes and complete required steps.
  • Provide feedback to the Rehab Therapy Manager as needed.

  • Assists occupational therapist in treatment planning and conducting evaluation procedures.
  • Assists the occupational therapist in treating patients utilizing modalities, therapeutic exercise, assistive devices, and functional activities.
  • Provides verbal and/or written feedback to primary occupational therapist regarding all significant observations or changes in the patient’s condition, reaction, and response to treatment.
  • Aids the occupational therapist in estimating equipment and supply needs and may participate in the acquisition and inventory of these items.
  • Provides coverage of patients in the absence of other staff.
  • Document’s patient’s status and progress according to established internal/external time standards and adherence to reimbursement guidelines. (Q)
  • Communicates with other appropriate people to integrate OT treatment as necessary, or as directed. (Q, S)
  • Participates in educational program for patients, patient's families, and health care workers regarding treatment procedures, functional activities, and home programs.
  • Participates in patient care conferences as requested.
  • Participates in various meetings and in-services as assigned. (Q, P)
  • Follows all hospital policy and procedures including but not limited to patient confidentiality and infection control. (Q)
  • Meets or exceeds program productivity expectations. (F)
  • Provides discipline specific coverage (following cross training orientation) within the Mary Free Bed system as requested. (F, S)
  • Supports program operations as assigned. (Q, S, P, G, F)
  • Functions as patient advocate. (S)
  • Demonstrates competence in relevant software and hardware required to meet job responsibilities. (Q)
  • Adheres to the Mary Free Bed Standards of Behavior when working with patients, coworkers and members of the community. (S)
  • Serves as clinical instructor for occupational therapist assistant students.
  • Supervises, teaches, and evaluates skills of students and volunteers.
  • Communicates with participating universities regarding skill levels of students. (S, P, G)
  • Functions as a resource person in area of expertise. (S, G)
  • Participates in program development and/or research activities as assigned. (Q, G)
  • Participates in orientation and training of new staff. (Q, P)
  • Assists in maintaining clean and orderly treatment areas. (S)
  • Completes other duties as assigned by leadership and/or the Program Manager.
